The third edition of North Carolina Waterfalls by Kevin Adams was recently released and it is a stunning improvement of a book that many of us in the waterfall community have treasured as in many ways the ultimate in guidebooks. Additional waterfalls listings have been added and the directions are as clear, detailed and accurate as in previous editions. What sets this edition apart from all other waterfall guidebooks is the photography. I have read several reviews on Facebook that describe this book as a masterpiece and I can honestly say that as I perused it’s pages for the first time, that was my initial impression as well. Page after page I turned and I found that not infrequently my response to a photo was “that is the best photo of that waterfall I’ve ever seen.” Many of them I have seen in person – some multiple times, and his photos capture them in a magical way. A majority of the photos are somewhat small, but large enough to draw the reader in and entice the viewer to want to see the waterfall in person. A good number of the real gems feature a full page color photo - each, without exception, providing a breathtaking vision. The book is organized as before into hubs with waterfalls within a specific geographic locale grouped together. This makes it very useful for identifying what to see if you know where you are going to be. If you are not sure where to go, browsing through the many hubs will certainly help simplify the process of deciding where to visit and explore. Some of the listings are short and succinct, whiles others give much more expansive descriptions and background information, and really provide a wonderful reading experience.
