I found this a very readable account of the politics behind draining a marsh to create tillable farmland back in the early 1900s in southern Minnesota. Though many local residents were against the plan, outside investors with deep pockets were able to keep pushing long enough for thecourts to finally side with them. Register intersperses government documents and newspaper accounts with personal family history to tell this story of progress and loss. For anyone interested in the history of rural land use and its effect on the environment, this is sure to be an engrossingtale.
