The original FOREST TREES OF MAINE, put out by the Maine Forest Service in 1908, and its subsequent 13 editions were wonderful little black & white booklets accurately describing the trees of the state of Maine. The new Centennial edition is such an extraordinary improvement that it appears to be a whole new book. It is spiral-bound for convenience in laying it flat or turned inside out when you need your hands to examine a leaf or cone. It has new range maps to indicate where you are most likely to find each of the 78 covered species. The exciting new color photographs make it easy to identify the leaves, bark and bud of each tree, and the antique pictures of old-time logging are a fascinating bonus. You will not regret buying this excellent reference book.

I bought this one at a zoo in Maine. I have been using the Peterson guides for years, and was naturally distrustful of this guide, since it seemed to be photo-based. It made me think of the Audubon guides, which are poor products for field ID. Anyhow, this one is photo-based, but the photos show all the specifics you need to ID the NE trees. The descriptions are excellent, and each species (oak, pine, etc.) has a checklist that lists the defining characteristics of each tree, side by side. Using this chart alone saves a ton of time. This book is the best, bar none. Don't take my word for it. I teach tree ID in my Environmental Science class. I gave the students five guides to choose from, and they all agreed this one was the most helpful. Note-I would advise getting the spiral-bound version, so that way you can lay it open flat while doing ID. If you can't find this on , it can be purchased through the Maine Forest Service also. Heck, they have the whole guide available in PDF format on their website-if you are really strapped for cash, you can download it, print it, and bind up your own copy.

I would give this book a 10 if I could. The pictures are clear and in color, excellent format. I also love the registry of big trees fact box. I had one myself and have ordered one for my sister and one for our town's library.

I bought this book several years ago directly from the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry. I carry it in my backpack and it is one of the most used reference books I have on trees. Although this manual is targeted at trees found in Maine, it well covers trees in the greater part of the northeast United States. Using this manual, I was able to i.d. a tree that had been puzzling me for a while: a single box elder that was growing among the maple trees in the woods. The close-up photographs of leaves, bark, buds, and seeds and fruit are large and absolutely clear and recognizable. This makes identification a lot easier. Every photo of a tree trunk is taken with a ruler to show trunk size. The written descriptions are clear, accurate, and point out the relevant features of the bark, leaves wood, fruit, and flowers in clear and practical language. The leaf photos are also supplemented with line drawings and this makes is easier to see the relevant details needed for identification. The beginning of the book has a section on taking precautions with poisonous plants (sumac, poison ivy) and ticks; there are two sections keyed on identifying trees in the summer and in the winter along with a glossary and a series of excellent line drawings to help in recognizing leaf shapes and structures. All these are easy to use and will help you make a rapid identification of nearly any tree found in New England. If you live in the northeast you MUST have this book in your backpack or car.

The spiral bound version of this book is extremely well done. It is very descriptive and provides color pictures for leaves, buds, bark and cones. The card type stalk that its is made of is moderately water-resistant. I would say not to let it get wet but a little sprinkling doesn't seem to hurt it. I find that this is both a beginners book and an advanced book. The more I read it the more I pick up on. There are also special sections in the front for learning vocabulary and at the beginning of each family of tree for quick identification tables. It really is a great book, I only wish nearby states and provinces had publications so comprehensive.

I love this book. Excellent overview of trees, with clear photographs of leaves, bark, cones, and habit, Thoughtfully presented with great care and passion for the trees and forests of Maine. With this book, you will have, I think , very little problem identifying the trees of Maine. You can get a copy by going to the website of Maine Forestry Dept. It costs $15 and postage is free. Its quicker just to call their office - real people pick up - and order it. They send you the book along with the invoice. No returns are accepted.

Shipping was super fast on this order. Book exactly as described. Excellent service. Was a gift for my husband and he has throughly enjoyed this book. Even though he has spent years in the woods of Maine he found this book very informative.

Fantastic book, detailed information on every tree species in Maine helped treemendously during my summer job running a camp nature program. I also got the book quickly and at a great price. I highly recommend this book.
