My boys are ages 10 and 11. One in particular would play video games all day long if I let him, and does not like to read. I got them this book and they had a lot of fun looking through it. It has lots of colorful pictures and short snippets of information so it hardly seems like real reading to them. After they read it for awhile, they set it aside and went outside to play their own game of explorers. Anything that can manage to get them to enjoy reading and gets them active outdoors is five stars in my book. Now if I could just find something that would make them as enthusiastic about eating their veggies . . .
Each chapter in this nicely illustrated, hardcover book opens with an "Explorer's Quest" asking the young reader to imagine himself or herself on a given mission or adventure, traveling by land, sea, or air, and passing through dense forests, barren deserts, or snow-covered lands. For each type of terrain or travel mode, the young reader is given instruction on what to wear for comfort and protection, what challenges may lie ahead and how to be prepared for them (e.g., what to do in case of a sandstorm or avalanche), and survival skills such as how to look for food and water, or handle situations such as snake bites or coming face to face with a potentially dangerous animal.There are also useful discussions of pioneering explorers and their achievements, special talents of inhabitants living in certain regions of the world, and historical tidbits about special places in the world.The facts and information are delivered in a very concise and straightforward manner, often with a bit of humor mixed in.Sometimes, the information itself may revolve around potentially scary subject matters (e.g., encounters with potentially dangerous animals), so parental guidance is recommended for younger readers. Except for this caveat, a young reader who likes adventures will find this book an informative and rewarding read.
You certainly never know what you'll hear when you buy a book for a 10-year-old grandchild's 11th birthday. "I put it in the dumpster"? "It's under the bed"? "Book, what book"? Least likely is hearing that she told her grandmother "I'm up to page 50 & let me read you the part about African animals & especially how rhinos go to the bathroom!" A reader - wow - an adventure-seeking reader - wow, wow. Now I've got to find a female equivalent of the Hornblower novels. I'm thinking of "She" by H. Rider Haggard as a Christmas present; can anyone suggest another?
Really awesome book! I bought this for my nature loving 6 yr old. He loves to read it together-although some of it is definitely for older kids so we skip over those parts. My husband-not a book lover by any means-even picked it up and looked through it. The whole time he kept saying he wished he had books like this one when he was a kid:)
I bought this book for my 10 year old nephew and my 8 year old son saw it and had to have it also. They both loved it. It's a very nice looking hardcover book with nice illustrations. A year later and my son still picks it up occasionally and reads through it. He gave it 5 stars, so I do too.
We used this as part of a homeschool geography program, but my kids (especially my 11-yr old) keep reaching for it for non-school reading. Lots of different, short topics, so it can be picked up and enjoyed over and over, with big breaks in between.
I wasnt expecting this to be a hard cover book. I missed that in the description, but was pleasantly surprised upon delivery. My 9 yo son just cant put this book down. He spent the entire day trying to tell me how he would wrestle an alligator, escape from quicksand, or protect himself from a grizzly attack. This book is WAY cool!!!
I have enjoyed all of the Lonely Planet Not For Parents books and this was no exception. The thing I loved the most was that I got my husband, who is NOT a reader, to sit down with the kids and read this one. Or discuss actually because they would get so hung up on each page that it took forever to get very far. The kids enjoyed their dad time and dad got to 'read' a book he actually found interesting! And I enjoyed all the fun facts as well. This is one we'll keep on the shelf forever. I also plan to get this one as a gift for a lot of people. I think when you need a family gift, something the whole family will enjoy, this is a book you'd want to consider (or any of the Lonely Planet, Not For Parents books). I highly recommend!
