I realize this book says "not for parents". However, as a parent, I do feel like we are sometimes left out of all the fun. It's like the world expects us to have lost all sense of fun and excitement once we became adults and had families of our own. Well, I am here to say, that I am not dead yet! I want to read about "the planet's hottest, wettest, deepest, coldest, highest, driest, windiest, and all-round wildest places" too. And I'm all about "the biggest, smallest, smelliest, slimiest, weirdest, and kookiest critters"! So while my 11-year-old son has attempted to commandeer the book for himself, he doesn't know that I sneak around with it while he is at school. Some of you may be asking why I can't just follow the rules and agree that this book is "not for parents". Well, here's why. It's broken down into reasonably short two-page spreads with lots of pictures and short blurbs of fascinating information - perfect for a busy parent who has other, parenty-type things to do. Perfect also for the parent who is trying to read without the kids finding out...And while I am aware that us parents are supposed to know everything (even though our kids *think* we know nothing), sometimes I *don't* have all the answers. So it's pretty cool when I can AMAZE my children (they pretend they're not amazed, but I think we all know better) with tidbits like these:* Hippo sweat is pink* The ghost beetle is the whitest natural object on Earth* Modern-day chickens are actually descendants of Tyrannosaurus Rex* The "vampire squid from hell" (really) has the biggest eyes in the animal kingdom - if humans had eyes the same ratio, they would be as big as beach balls.* The largest insect in the world is from New Zealand and eats full-size carrotsSee?
