Despite reports of pet pigs being purchased by Paris Hilton, George Clooney, and more recently director James Cameron, "Minipigs" may have reached the height of their popularity. As early as 6 months into the process, most owners are finding their formerly "oh so cute" minipigs too big, cumbersome and labor-intensive to be either adorable or worth the bother. Intelligent and rewarding pets for the owner who has the time and resources to devote to them, pigs are genetically "programmed" to eat themselves "out of house and home." In response to the problem of the animal's "fatal flaw" (i.e., food), sellers are increasingly breeding tiny boars with raging hormones to equally diminutive sows that, within a couple of months after weaning, are themselves capable of conceiving of a litter. The result is a family of "runts," classified as "Teacup," or "Micro" pigs, which unscrupulous breeders promise will be 10 pounds at full maturity in exchange for the asking price of 5-6 grand. But gradually the public is wising up.Children can make babies, but just because these are the offspring of immature parents doesn't prevent them from attaining enormous bulk and packing on 200-300 pounds after a mere several years. The owner soon discovers that the pig's voracious appetite is a double-edged sword: on the one hand, it makes the animal highly trainable and "treat-responsive" to the owner's commands; on the other hand, it can make it highly impractical to award house-pet status to a potentially aggressive and destructive land behemoth (one of the reasons many cities have ordinances against minipigs, classifying them as "farm animals" rather than pets).In "sizing up" pet pigs, the author is neither infatuated by the animals nor opposed to them as pets.
