In post-WWII Russia, one boy dares to save an entire race of outlawed dogs -- the German shepherd!World War II has just ended when thirteen-year-old Mikhail finds a dying man and his German shepherd, Zasha, in the woods. It's dangerous -- some say traitorous -- to own a German dog after Germany attacked Russia, so Mikhail must keep Zasha a secret to keep her alive. But Mikhail's rival, Katia, is determined to find the dog she is sure he's hiding. At the same time, a soldier named Dimitri is breeding a new Russian dog at a nearby farm. So many dogs were lost in combat, to starvation, and in the slaughter of German dogs that the country is in dire need of every kind of dog. Dimitri, too, has suspicions of Zasha's existance, and would like nothing more than to add her to his breeding program. He'll have to compete with the armed dog thieves who are also on her trail. Mikhail's inspiring journey to save his best friend, the last German shepherd in Russia, forces him to face some of life's hardest lessons about war, hate, forgiveness, hope, love, and man's best friend.

This is an amazing book. Great story line and character development. I could not put it down and can not wait for the sequel! A must read!

i love dogs and this was the perfect book for me. Great story, great writing. It has heart, history and everything that makes me love a book.

I am middle aged and usually read murder mysteries, but I checked out Saving Zasha when I saw it at the library. It is sad, funny, fast paced and worthwhile reading for aging sentimental fools. If you enjoy a good world war two story, this may interest you, too. I ordered copies for myself and a dog loving friend before I'd finished the second chapter. The dog on the cover cannot be the beautiful Zasha, though.

My ten year old ordered this book because he enjoys books about animals and their stories. He got half way through this book and said he didn't want to finish it because it was too intense. We are putting it away until he is ready for this story.

According to my 13 year old son:It is a good book. It tells you the effects that the war had on some families. Little acts like owning a German Sheppard was not allowed because they were at war with the Russians. It is a little graphic for young children. Otherwise, it is highly recommended and is a good book.

This book was chosen as a gift. Thoroughly enjoyed by an advanced reader in the 3rd grade especially since she likes animal stories.

This is an exciting book! I am reading it to my fourth grade class and they can't wait to find out what happens next! I read the first book in the series to them and then had to order this one because we were left hanging in suspense!

My son read Finding Zasha first, and is now reading Saving Zasha. My 9 yr old son loves the books so much that he can't stop reading, I have to force him to put it away and turn out the light. The story line is perfect for his age group - historical fiction, war, a 'hero boy', dogs. I love that it's a good book that's teaching him some history while exciting him about reading. I sincerely hope this author will write more books!
