The following review is based on an Advanced Reading Copy I received directly from the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review. Author Katy Huth Jones has penned another wonderful novel about a period of European history with which most of us are unfamiliar. All of the hallmarks of Katy's writing are here: strong characters, lively description, and solid values. In a time when so many people are searching for truth and trying to decide what to believe in, this historical novel offers a powerful example that may be especially important to our young people--a fine piece of writing from a gifted author.
I loved this book and was greatly saddened at the anticipated ending. The Description of the time period in history is beautiful and places one right in the action. I look forward to reading it again and I don't do that with many books
I love history, and this YA historical novel was refreshing. It brought to life a Czech hero and saint previously unknown to me, Vaclav, called Winceslas in English. I'd heard the name Winceslas but didn't know anything about him.The narrator, Poidevin, stole my heart immediately. This child slave learned the kindness and generosity of Vaclav, who became his master and friend after a turn of political events. Through Vaclav, Poidevin grew from a follower of his people's pagan teachings to one of Christ's.I eagerly returned to this novel each day until I completed it, while reading a few novels at once. Treachery and Truth is short as novels go, but that's a good thing to draw the interest of young male readers. If I were to change one thing about the story, it's this: Toward the end, Poidevin has matured and says he has been trained by Zito to defend Vaclav. I wish there had been a scene earlier that shows him in training. I think teen boys would enjoy that.
This is a good little historical novel. The characters are interesting, and the plot moves along well. I learned some things about why Vaclav Premysl is the national hero and patron of the Czech Republic. It also explains why some of their presidents have been named Vaclav. The contrast of the old pagan beliefs with Christianity in the early 900's A.D. is interesting. The gradual understanding of the boy narrator, Poidevin, as Duke Vaclav tutors him in the new religion, is moving and believably done. The only thing I would criticize is the fictional Vaclav's extreme naivete vis a vis his enemies, which led to his early death. But maybe the real Vaclav, who was declared a saint in medieval times, was really that naive. In any case, I enjoyed the book and recommend it to adults and young people. In the front there is a pronunciation list of characters, and a map, which are helpful.
Very good writing .I learned some things that I didn't know, and that is important to me. I read partly for entertainment, and partly to learn more. I enjoyed the book.
