I have read this book for three years now with my fifth grade students. Every student has loved this book, many said it was the best book they ever read. The book makes war more real to my students by telling the story through the eyes of a child their own age. I feel the book is masterfully written, and contains a strong main character. There is an abundance of profanity used throughout this book.
The Fighting Ground by Avi is an awesome book. It went by minute by minute and always had you on the edge of your seat. It is very discriptive and easy to picture, it was like watching a movie in your mind. This is my first Avi book and definitely not my last. Anybody that would give this a bad review must have been reding another book.
The Fighting Ground is a great book about a 15 years old boy named Jonathan who lived in Trenton, New Jersey. This book is set during the American Revolutionary war. America was fighting for its independence from England. Jonathan is the only boy in his family who had not gone to war so he was waiting for his turn to go to war. Then one day, the bell rang at the Tavern and Jonathan went to go see what was happening. A Corporal was at the Tavern recruiting men to fight the Hessians (German Mercenaries serving for the British in the Revolution). The men of the town thought Jonathan was too young, but the Corporal took him any way. So Jonathan was on his way to war, the one thing he was dreaming of doing for almost half of his life. This was a really good book with a sad middle and an exiting climax. If I could read this book a million and one more times I would. The detail in the book was exciting and I encourage every one to read The Fighting Ground.
This short book goes through a day of war with a young kid. It's a fairly good story but it needed to say "this is the Revolutionary War." Young kids wouldn't necessarily understand that from the dates of the book. The first half has a lot of good detail, such as the heaviness of the gun that Jonathan, the 13 year old boy, is carrying, and how hard it is to load it. The second half is unrealistic. Jonathan is a prisoner to the Hessians. Later they all fall asleep and Jonathan escapes back to the Americans. For half of the book he is fighting for the Americans, for the other half he is doing good deeds for the other side. I feel that this book does not show what would happen in a real war.
I didn't like the part when the corporal left his people behind in the war. I did like the part when the tavern guy gave Johnathan the gun because he had to go to the war and that he was nice.I also liked the part when Jonathan found the boy becausehe would have died and if Johnatan had not saved him the boy would be very alone. This book is good and everybody should read it because it teaches you not to go to the war with people bigger and older than you and never abandond your parents even if it's something you like.
This book did a terrible job with action. The soldiers are marching for pretty much the entire book. Also alot of bad things happen that the characters easily could have prevented. This book has alot of things that are written in german. you literally have to flip to the back of the book for the translations. the translations make the story a lot more confuseing. this book is awful.
This book jumps right into the fire, literally. All action. The realities and complexities of war are revealed through this tale. War is indeed hell, but not just for "our side". A fast read and an important work.
I rated this book five stars because I liked Avi's descripion and detail to the plot. Also I liked the way Avi described the battle. Another reason I liked this book is because there was alot of action and adventure with some unusual twists. My opinion is this book was awesome!
