I have to confess that just the title alone on this book sold me before the book had even been released. When I did receive my copy and read it, I was not disappointed. This really is the definitive treatment of the subject of Bigfoot in Georgia, or, as we here at the Georgia Bigfoot Society prefer to call him, Sasquatch. What I found most interesting about this book were the numerous historical accounts of Sasquatch in Georgia, including Indian stories and legends. And, for those inclined to pursue these stories in greater detail, the endnotes provided by by Mr. Wells were most informative. But the truly greatest highlight of this book was the author's treatment of the Elkins Creek cast. It was the most in depth and detailed account of that discovery that I have ever read. So, in conclusion, I must admit that it was hard to find any fault with this book. It now has a permanent place on a shelf in my library of Sasquatchery, right along side of such classics as "Sasquatch: Legend Meets Science" by Dr. Jeff Meldrum and "Bigfoot Sasquatch Evidence" by Dr. Grover S. Krantz. I highly recommend it to any serious student of the Big Guy in Georgia.
Georgia made international news when 2 men came forward and said they had the body of a dead bigfoot, found in north Georgia, in 2008. Many were disappointed, but not too surprised, when it turned out to be a hoax. Anyway, if bigfoot does exist, it lives somewhere in the Pacific Northwest right? Wrong. Georgia Military College Professor Wells' new book, Bigfoot In Georgia looks at the history of sightings as well as the current state of the hunt for bigfoot in the Peach State. The historian does a good job of pulling together sources from across the state that include stories 200 years old as well as some of the latest reports from the present. His 166 page book has almost 200 Endnote entries, as you would expect from a historian. He includes interviews of dedicated researchers in Georgia as well as the thoughts of professors and professionals seen on just about every bigfoot TV special. It is an interesting read for sure, especially for those living in the Deep South. People in Georgia have been seeing, and smelling, something in the woods in Georgia for years. This book will give a better insight to those curious as to what has been seen, where, and what researchers think. Why the reports are coming in seems to be due to encroachment of habitat per Dr. Wells. Makes sense with the growth rate in Georgia, as he points out. Some of these stories, made by honest people with everything to lose, are pretty scary. And,oddly enough, since the 2008 hoax the reports have kept coming in and the researchers keep going out, in search of evidence. So, I guess bigfoot didn't get the memo about his being a hoax. By the way, Dr. Wells mentions that he talked to the hoaxers and found they knew little of the scientific work being done on bigfoot, the real bigfoot, here in Georgia. Anyway, I recommend Dr. Well's book. Especially as we head into summer camping season. Grab this book for a few scary campfire stories and something to think about on your next hike.
This is a fun book to read and wonder if such a creature could exist. I purchased it as we are planning a trip to the north Georgia mountains. I will believe when they capture one or find more evidence other than "footprints".
I really enjoyed this book! If you are interested in Bigfoot, this is a must read. I wasn't aware of the number of sightings in Georgia, not to mention one of the nations best foot prints.
This is a wounderful look at the Sasquatch in the wilds of Georgia. It clearly outlines the history of the creature and gives several references of present happenings, and I the cover is genius. If you do now about Bigfoot, or know absolutely nothing, this is a great book to study.
Jeffery Wells effectively uses his skills as a researcher of history and a college educator to bring to life, in a clear and well organized manner, the surprisingly lengthy story of bigfoot reports in Georgia. He diligently examines the relevant background information surrounding each case, and whenever possible fills in the reader on the background and personalities of those people in Georgia who have been the source of the reports. The book begins with an in depth examination of native American legends predating European settlement, followed by reports from early settlers and going well into the 20th century. Newly documented reports of this nature concerning bigfoot are of special interest to me because the "copycat factor" afforded by the modern internet was not available to these witnesses. In covering the last few decades, Mr Wells does a very thorough job of documenting and reporting on the bigfoot phenomenon in Georgia and those who have been investigating it in their various parts of the state. Throughout the book he maintains an objective attitude, being careful to present reports accurately and without embellishment or personal interpretations. In the final chapter he presents some thoughtful conclusions about what it all means for the residents of Georgia and for the large hairy bipeds that have been reported in so many parts of the state.I found this book to be enjoyable and informative, and it is a must read for anyone interested in bigfoot in Georgia.Bob Daigle
