As an intro book, I found it extremely useful and packed with necessary information. Whoever said there was too much information to be found in this book is completely off the mark, although, this book is probably best suited to those who are pursuing a career in this field. The CD-ROM could have been more fully developed...
I am returning to school for my third degree. This text is by far the worst book I have ever cracked. I am giving it a single star since I can't rate it with none. Paragraph after paragraph the text contradicts itself. My professor is scrambling to help a class of post bachelor students pass. How sad is this? Our online blackboard is flooded with text based confusion and examples of contradictions within the text. Upon completion of each chapter you are left with a sense of resounding confusion and the thought "am I really this stupid" then you talk to your peers and professor and find that noone has made sense of it and we are all in the audiology program! What else is there to say!
Introduction to Audiology is an horrible book because it's so technically dry, boring, and seemingly pointless. I found the online resources to be frankly straightforward, clear, and to the point. Everyone in my class has agreed on this.
This book is extremely hard to follow for the introductory student. The way it is organized creates confusion as it frequently references information in subsequent chapters. I ended up also purchasing the e-text from Pearson directly. It was far more cost effective and provided access to the site for videos, which give a MUCH better insight into things than the written detail. The author is extremely well reputed in the field, but the writing is hard to follow and seems as though it could be simplified for the burgeoning student. Some redundancy is appreciated in textbooks to reinforce learning, however in this book, the authors syntax and general style create more confusion.I find myself frequently looking up details elsewhere, and better understand the concepts when they found outside of this text.
I have a BS in Audiology and am going back for my Au.D -- and this book is excellent in bringing me back up to speed on the materials I haven't touched in nearly 10 years. It is concise (definitely not wordy) and hits all the basics, starting from the history of hearing checks to today's detailed technological miracles of testing. Could have a bit more of the anatomy, but other than that, it really is a great start for those wanting to enter the field of Audiology.
This book is one I refer to again and again and again. Not too dry, very informative, accurate, and helpful tables and diagrams.A must (or at least a should) for anyone interested in Audiology.
Teacher wanted us to get this edition, not the latest one. Ok, it's much less expensive - but information doesn't always dovetail with the textbook nor her lectures. The cd is so out of date my computer wouldn't read it. This was a supplement for the class.
I just want to say that this text book is really easy to understand as well as to read. If some kind of uncertainty arises you can always refer to the CD that it comes with and it will help you understand the material in a more efficient and concrete way. I am happy with the text and I can now understand the science behind the hearing mechanism. I would recommend this text for the begginers with an interest to specialize in hearing and/or speech sciences.
