I would not recomend the 2014 NEC Handbook for Kindle. It's missing the shaded sections indicating the changes from the previous 2011 code, and doesn’t differentiate between the actual code and the handbook references.
The NEC Electric Handbook is an expanded version of the NEC Code book. It provides examples, diagrams and explanations of the electric code being used. Since the entire Code Book is included, I never purchase just the Code Book. The Handbook is much better as a reference guide. I recommend the purchase and use of this book.
The 2014 NFPA 70 Handbook version has eliminated the Table of Contents for each individual article. I thought this information in previous additions drastically improved navigating the NEC. In previous additions a key word could usually reduce the search to one article and then the Table of Contents for that article. Not anymore. This version forces the search through the Index for the entire book.
I think it is great that several of these reference books are being put into PDF format; however, I see several areas that need improvement.The good:Like many PDF books, it is searchable.Clicking on the table of contents will take you to the desired section. (Edit: After reading another review, I found out there used to be a table of contents for each section. Like the previous reviewer stated, this no longer exists.)The bad:You pay the extra money for the handbook because it is supposed to be more explanatory and offer more pictures to highlight what is being discussed; however, this was minimal in the book. I purchased this book because it has the NFPA stamp on it, but I think a little bit more effort needs to be placed in the handbook.It is searchable, but it is often confusing to determine what section you are in. No effort was made into making the search portion user friendly. You literally have to page back, which is extremely time consuming, to determine what section you are in. (You could find out you are in a section about swimming pools or residential housing, when you want to be in the industrial building section).Overall, I feel that more effort needs to be placed in making this book user friendly for someone using the PDF version, and the handbook needs better and more illustrations.
The Handbook itself is a great tool that I have always found more useful than just the Code itself; my issue lies with the electronic Kindle format. It's not as searchable or readily navigable as the pdf version I have previously had . Also, many of the charts and tables are not readable - they are embedded as images instead of text, so I end up using the online NEC at the NFPA for that content, switching back and forth. Extremely time consuming and almost useless! I should note that I use the  PC Kindle application - maybe this would work better on a Kindle. I struggled with this for so long that I ran out of time to return it! You may not want to bother with this at all.
Dont really know hat to say other than it is an irreplaceable necessity for electricians. the handbook is a little easier to understand and study than the traditional book. with the added illustrations you can remember the codes better as well.
The Handbook makes the code much easier to understand. However, if pursuing certification, make sure to check the editions you are able to bring to the exam, as I cannot bring the Handbook to my testing center. I will need a copy of the plain code for that.
This book contains not only code, but examples of how to properly apply NEC code to electrical installations. A must have to help ensure code compliance.
