I can't say that I'd give this book 5 stars, because I just needed it for a class. It is very simply organized-it's easy to find what you need in a timely manner (such as when taking timed tests online) ;) but that's about it.
This book is amazing! It has all the information there that you need to confidently assess, diagnose and manage motor speech disorders. It is well set out and allows you to return to specific areas to look things up very easily. The accompanying online learning trains your ear to identify the different types of motor speech disorders. I have learned so much from studying this text which is directly relevant in my work as a speech pathologist with adult acquired communication disorders. My only criticism would be the chapter on psychiatric conditons and motor speech disorders - it really didn't seem to understand the complexities of this area or describe it very well. Otherwise, highly recommended.
Duffy is such an important name in the field of motor speech disorders, but this book is difficult to read until the later chapters. I am sure, however, that it will remain an important reference for my practice.
This is an excellent book to differentiate between the different motor speech disorders. It provides clear and precise sections and the overall organization of the text makes it extremely useful as a reference while in the field. It provides many charts to compare between the disorders (i.e. motor speech exam findings, perceptual characteristics, etiologies). It also provides an online companion lecture PPT with video and audio examples of perceptual speech characteristics and motor speech examination findings (which I have used both clinically) which aids in a more universal understanding and reference to perceptual speech characteristics.
Many, many SLPs I know reference this book in practice. It is very helpful and useful for students and practicing SLPs.
All of my professors rave about Duffy and this textbook. I will definitely be keeping it for reference in the future!
