Can't believe everything you read. Silly me for reading the review and believing a CD would be included with a new copy of this book. It' ain't. But gee, the back of the book tells me the ISBN for the Supplemental Audio CD: 0132582619Small Audio CD Funda Phone Ssp 3. Or, if you want them together, look for 0132700646. Fundamentals of Phonetics with Audio CDs Glad I ordered early. Grrrr...

I am currently pursuing a career in Speech Language Pathology and recently finished taking a course in Phonetics and Articulation. This book was extremely helpful, clear, comprehensive and easily understood. I would highly recommend this for anyone who is seriously considering a profession in the field of speech. Even if this is not a required text for your class, which in my case it was, it is worth the money to buy this book and save it as a reference and material that you can supplement for whatever you may be learning! It contains a lot of practice, and in more expensive additions you can receive a CD which has prerecorded utterances that have homework/assignments in which you transcribe these different utterances (usually people with accents or language influenced english etc.) I may sound repetitive but really this is an amazing book!

I was pleasantly surprised by this textbook! For one, I can't remember the last time, if ever, I went through an entire textbook in a class. Normally we get part way through. Then you're stuck with half a book you're never going to touch again. But this book was useful from cover to cover. Not just useful, but engaging. I went into the course knowing nothing about phonetics, but between the teacher and the text, I now feel very competent. The activities really help you learn, and the CDs are surprisingly useful accompaniments. I can't sell this book back because it is absolutely filled with writing and highlighter, but I wouldn't sell it back even if I could. I'm actually going to keep it and probably end up referring to it because it is so handy. I would definitely recommend this text for teachers selecting a book for their phonetics classes. Probably the best textbook I've ever been assigned to use.

Teaches the basics of phonetics. The author uses lots of descriptive words and helpful real life instances. The book that comes with the cd is helpful to hear the way sounds are made. Author makes it easy to pronounce the sounds yourself out loud based on descriptions.

This workbook helped me so much for my class. It is a MUST. There were lots of relevant and fun phonetics practice exercises with answers in the back of the book. Beware of a few discrepancies though. Consult your instructor if an answer doesn't seem right. Our class found a few.

This book is not a difficult read at all it is very clear and precise all the way through. The arrangement of the book makes sense. It will benefit you to read it from start to finish. Be sure to follow all of the suggestions. Do the exercise assignments as you go and the chapters review too. Lastly, if you are talking a Phonetics course see to it that you get your book on time or before hand. I got my book weeks into the semester and I believe I did myself a favor by finally reading the book from the beginning.EnjoyMrs M&M

This one is an overwhelming book for sounds in English. I will have to review it. It demonstrates that there is no perfect English. Even natives have a lot of problems for pronunciations. How about foreigners! When a language does not follow its alphabet sounds, like Spanish and French how could it be easy for foreigners to know? I will have to review everything when time permits. But the book by itself is interesting for its content.

Thanks L. E. Thomas for your review. I too thought the CD would come with the book. had it not been for the ISBNs that you posted, my wife would have been disappointed to open her book and not find the CD... like a child at Christmas, needing batteries. I did notice that no longer makes any claim that the CD is included, but it would be nice if they were more clear on the fact that the CD is sold separately.Although I would usually give 6 out of 5 stars, I was a little confused this time...
