I volunteer for a citizenship class aimed at getting immigrants with very little literacy to past the citizenship text. This is their course material and its excellent for a low literacy level student. The approach to take with this text is really rote memorization (reading the passages and getting the students to repeat after you out loud), and lots of repetition. It helps understanding of some higher level terms by defining the words in the simplest way (some overly-simplified, but that is what is needed at this level, development of the ideas can come later as the student advances in their overall understanding). This book is simple enough for students to read at home and covers all 100 civics questions on the actual test. Recommended.
This book has been extremely helpful for my ESL student. It breaks the subject matter down and explains what a lot of words mean which are really difficult for someone with limited English, simple, good repetition, useful illustrations.
I use this in one on one tutoring with students who have limited vocabulary or learning difficulties. It explains material in simple terms, including defining words like "participate" or "democracy.". It covers the basics of the citizenship test but is much easier to understand than the standard book.
As an ESL (English as a Second Language) tutor, I found this book with its two audio CDs very helpful for students wanting to both read and hear the information. You get two for the price of one. While I have an older version, I'm guessing 's offering also has the CDs as the ISBN-13 numbers are the same as are the editions.
A good aid for the student I am tutoring for the citizenship exam
This book was great to teach citizenship because the lessons were short and to the point. This helped my lower leveled ESL students, and I supplemented for my more advanced students.
Excellent book for preparing ESL students to pass their citizenship test. I highly recommend it.
Purchased this book which includes the CDs for my daughters. They love it.
