My wife passed her test you get the same thing free in English when you go down for your bio-metrics. You can probably get by with just the English version. There pointers and help about the interview process.
I wanted the questions grouped together so the student could read the question in there native language and then read in English to help the understanding of what the words meaning is. Also it should include a cd for the price I paid.
The book requires a lot of back and forth page flipping. So, when I'm teaching someone we have to go back-and-forth between sections of the book. It's irritating! The way it should be is that the English and Chinese appears together for each question item. This book's information is available on various webpages but I haven't seen it in the format that I want to see it in: English and Chinese questions and answers for each item. How hard could it have been to have thought of that?The asterisks which are appended to the occasional questions and are intended to identify the short form test content, are buried at the end of some questions; they are not prefixed in front, at the left of each question so that they stand out and all appear in the same relative place. How irritating is for that, to have to search for these markers instead of having them stand out on their own?Learning English, in my mind is a separate topic. My students are mostly interested in just passing the test by recognizing the questions and spewing out the desired answers, which are required for the mostly goofy and silly naturalization questions. It's just something that has to be done.Preparing one's own written material during one's studies is of course a long time honored tradition and helps greatly with absorbing material. But it's inconvenient and messy to have a handwritten parallel book interleaved with a store-bought one.The other problem with this book is that it uses the old-fashioned traditional Chinese characters which are now mostly only used in Taiwan; most young immigrants use the simplified Chinese characters which, I think came into use in the 1950s and find it difficult to read the book in Chinese.Another shortcoming of of this book is that for each answer given not even a smidgen of historical relevance is given; in most cases short explanatory paragraph would have been peachy.It's just not a convenient book.
I have used this book to tutor two students so far and both have passed their interviews to become citizens. I plan to keep on using it. It provides an outline of basics and I add whatever I have to in order to make sure it is understood. I combine the civics with ESL and make up handouts for reinforcement. I often wonder how many native-born citizens know this information. Most of it should have been learned in the fifth grade, so there are no excuses.
My Chinese wife studies this book and a CD on a daily basis improving her English as well as studying for the U.S Citizenship test. Her English has improved a great deal.
