I just started reading and was first surprised to see small typographic errors like "elleclive perlormance lime" in a book that I thought should be inscrutable. Just now I read a paragraph describing that "cerebral blood vessels respond to the decrease in carbon dioxide by vasodilation." I don't know if I should keep reading and risk that I am getting a compromised text. I suggest you not invest in this book until the publisher revisits it and corrects problems in the next edition.Critical Care TransportJust read the description of "subarachnoid hemorrhage" described as bleeding between the arachnoid and dura mater (instead of pia mater, which would be correct)[American (AAOS); UMBC, (2009-11-13). The 2011 edition is outdated in accordance current practices, and needs updated and edited for clarity as it is was not well-proofed. You will find contradictory and confusing information within paragraphs. For example: "As a general rule, hypoxic patients should receive supplemental oxygen to maintain their oxygen saturation about 94%.Unnecessary oxygen administration, resulting in supranormal oxygen saturations or hyperoxia, is increasingly associated with increased morbidity and mortality in critically ill patients. Remember, it is possible for a patient to have an Spo2 of greater than 95% and still be hypoxic at the cellular level." In the very next paragraph it states "Remember, with a critically ill patient, too much oxygen is better than too little". There is no clear argument for either witholding or administering oxygen. The take-away of this is to rely on blood gases; however, in the context of the information being presented on page 144, blood gases are not a consideration with the manner in which these two paragraphs are written.This is all on page 144, and is just one example of what will be found in this book. If you have the option of choosing another text, I would recommend doing so. If your course requries this book, I recommend you invest in supplemental information to add clarity to what you will find in this book.
I just took the FPC about 2 months ago with only a month to study for it I used this book and was able to pass everything that was on the test was covered in this book. Overall the content is pretty digestible may take some time to understand.
I think I need a bigger brain. Oh, by the way it is a good book full of practical information. Get the book BACK TO BASICS, the CCP-C prep book. It will help a lot with the application of the materiel.
Recently used CCT text for my Florida DOT aircrew course. The text covers, in depth, a miriad of critical care subjects. It is the most recent standard for critical care transport review used by Nurses, Medics, and Respiratory therapists. AAOS has published an essential text that I use for daily reference in my work as a paramedic.
This was a required text for my Air Medical Crewman Course. It was cheaper on than anywhere else. I read mixed reviews but found the material to be current and helpful. It is a good blend of material for the different disciplines involved in critical care transport. I found it quite relevant to our fixed wing/helo class.
This book is a "must-read" for any Pre-Hospital provider that has a couple years of experience and wants to excel. Easy to read but heavy for backpack use. Get it and read it at work and pass it on to the next stellar provider you feel will make good use of it!
Perfect on Kindle app for Mac. The ability to highlight and make notes within the text is an invaluable study aid., the ability to change background colors saves battery life. The information contained in the text is presented in a manner that promotes absorption of the material.
