I was an basic and intermediate EMT for years. Intimidated by learning how to interpret and analyze EKG's, it was, by far, one of the most frustrating topic for me in paramedic class. My instructor recommended the "Basic Arrhythmias" book by Gail Walraven and in no time at all interpreting and analyzing EKG's became easy and soon after I was doing it like a second nature. Now, as an EMT instructor, I recommend "Basic Arrhythmias" to my students and I am confident that they will find peace of mind in learning EKG's, just as I did.Thank you Gail Walraven.
I teach a Basic EKG Course in staff development and I highly recommend this book for all levels of health care providers from unit coordinators to nurse managers. The arrythmia practice strips are excellent and having the correct answers in the back of the book allows the adult learner to verify their interpertations or seek further learning in an area. The explaination of a difficult subject is made easy. I have used this book for several years and look forward to the new editions to see what else Gail Walraven has included.
I learned disrhythmia interpretation in a weekend with the help of this book, and still pull the book off the shelf ten years later to brush up on my skills. I recommend this book for anyone needing to learn and understand how to read a cardiac monitor.
I have to say that this is the best college text book I have ever used. Clear, concise explanations of semi-complicated topics. I could not ask any more out of a book, except maybe lowering the price.
This is a great book. I had no problem understanding arrhythmias after I read it cover to cover. I ace'd all my test.
I've been an ER nurse x 15 years, and I've bought several EKG books, and this is far the best. It begins with the simple basics, and gives lots of practice. I would highly recommend for anyone teaching ACLS. The software I would give only 4 stars, but it is still one of the better softwares I've seen. Make sure you have a set of calipers to use with this book.
This is a great book that focuses on II lead EKG arrhythmias with some added information about 12 Lead and heart anatomy. The way it's set up is that it introduces a concept and then repeats it a few different ways to make sure that you understand it. It has fill in the blanks so that it is interactive and keeps you engaged when you're reading. It splits the arrhythmias up based on where they originate in the heart and goes from least complex to most complex. There is also a helpful online component and VERY helpful rip out flash cards that summarize the rules. A few complaints: It does not cover combination arrythmias, which is much more useful when using these skills in real life. For example, patients will likely have an underlying arrhythmia complicated by occasional PVCs. It does not cover anything about pacemakers and paced rhythms. Finally, it is really expensive for a fairly thin workbook that's bulk is practice strips. I have been told that the earlier editions provide exactly the same content, so I would recommend getting that instead. Make sure not to buy used, though because it will be written in, likely have missing flashcards, and you won't have the online access code. Happy arrhythmia learning!
This book takes you step by step through the art of reading rhythm strips. In addition to the great tutorials, there are also many practice strips in the book and also on a CD-rom that comes with the book. I highly recommend the book to anyone who needs to read rhythm strips.
