I bought this after reading Stephen King's book on writing, in which he said this is the book he used in public school. I'm glad it's in my library. Its useful, well indexed and handy to have if you have any questions about grammar, spelling, syntax, etc.A must for anyone who cares about languages. Thanks, Stephen.
I am still using my copy (1951/1957 edition), and I have long recommend it to other teachers who want something to beef up their courseware. Exercises are straighforward and progressive and right in the book itself. The series are progressive, year to next year. The red and black text in my edition was unusual in ca. 1950-60, but the contrasting colors have always helped point me quickly to what I'm looking for. In my experience, unsurpassed were the index and treatment of diagramming. Having worked through the book in a senior composition and grammar class taught by a Latin teacher, I was fully equipped for the next step--composition classes at the University of Michigan, and graduate courses in Greek, Hebrew, French, German, and others later.
This is the only english grammar and composition book you'll ever need. Every student should have this in their library as the "go to book", because some of the newer books being used today do not cover the rules of grammar and composition well or they re-invent the standards and rules altogether. I have seen this book on the shelves of many educators(both high school and college)as well, so that definitely speaks to the quality of this book. I was pleased that this older book was available for purchase. I bought one for each of my children to use in high school and to take with them to college and beyond...I highly recommend this book!
This programmatic method for teaching grammar is the book I use for my grammar students. Even though it is old, and has no pictures like modern text books, I still like this book for its way of demonstration and practice.Even kids who struggle mightily with grammar structure will benefit by its use. Diagramming sentences is still the only way to teach grammar that makes the language make sense, and this edition will do that. I highly recommend this book to all concerned with getting grammar across to children.After they are done, the books can then work as a resource of grammar and usage for the writer. The formats and ideas brought out in this book are indeed useful to the student writer as much today as they were 30 years ago.
The whole series by Warriner is fantastic. I have been using it to teach my two children (we educate them at home). I have learned so much along with them. The book is so clear, and has so many examples and exercises that there is no way you won't learn.My daughter, 11, here by my side, is telling me to add that she even likes it.That's saying a lot, as grammar is not the most interesting subject.
Warriner's grammar IS the one, the ONLY text needed to learn or review grammar. The text presentation in simple black, white, and red keeps things simple with regard to importance, etc. Want to learn grammar?? Go to Warriner's!
With children and adults getting less than proper English training and teaching, this book provides the user a solid foundation for the English language. Some complaints are there are not enough lessons or problems to work, thus the reasons for a workbook..... Reading, writing, and grammar are critical for people and this book is well worth the low cost!
I had this from high school and somebody borrowed it and never returned it.Twenty-five years later it still left an impression and was worth replacing.This is an excellent text for anybody's reference library.
