Praise for Educating Nurses "This book represents a call to arms, a call for nursing educators and programs to step up in our preparation of nurses. This book will incite controversy, wonderful debate, and dialogue among nurses and others. It is a must-read for every nurse educator and for every nurse that yearns for nursing to acknowledge and reach for the real difference that nursing can make in safety and quality in health care." —Beverly Malone, chief executive officer, National League for Nursing "This book describes specific steps that will enable a new system to improve both nursing formation and patient care. It provides a timely and essential element to health care reform." —David C. Leach, former executive director, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education "The ideas about caregiving developed here make a profoundly philosophical and intellectually innovative contribution to medicine as well as all healing professions, and to anyone concerned with ethics. Excellent quality and timing of delivery. This is a revolutionary approach to the "way we always teach." Evidence based and outstanding suggestions are in every chapter. Benner does it again.

EDUCATING NURSES: A CALL FOR RADICAL TRANSFORMATION is a call for change and modification for any program teaching nursing. It offers specific steps to create new systems to improve nursing and patient care, demonstrating how and why nursing professions need to change and recommending four controversial yet key changes to change nursing education. Any college-level library needs this.

As a nurse and educator, I am finding this book validating and filled with insights. Many educators today, like me, were educated when the healthcare environment was simpler and nursing care was less complex. Today's needs are much different as are the students. "Educating Nurses" defines the need for change as well as the change needed.

One of my favorite scholars, Pat Benner brings it. Her work is thoughtful and complex, and this book unites the best of all minds to take a hard look at modern day nursing education. The authors fearlessly assert that it's just not good enough, and thankfully, clearly offer the suggestion of where to go next. Well written, easy to follow, and fodder for the contemplative mind. Excellent!

Educating nurses: A call for radical transformation (Benner,Sutphen,Leonard,& Day, 2010) is not just another book about what needs to be changed in nursing education curriculums. It is not simply a descriptive summary of the findings from a multi-site study of nine different nursing programs across the country. The scholarly work presented in this book is a collection of what nurses really are, do, and need to be. The authors discuss the issues most urgent for nursing and nursing education today, including: prerequisite courses for entry into nursing schools; licensing and minimum degree requirements; descriptions of best practices in nursing instruction; the need for workforce diversity; and a description of the multi-faceted knowledge base and skills required to provide comprehensive nursing care, are but some of them. It is my opinion that this book has great potential to serve as a catalyst and guide for the implementation of transformational changes in professional nursing education. The book accurately depicts shortcomings and problems present in modern day nursing education. By utilizing theory and clinical knowledge, followed by the identification of those needs most relevant and urgent, it reflects the sense of salience referred to throughout its pages. This scholarly work is not merely a comprehensive assessment of modern day nursing education programs. True to the professional expectations of nurses, the authors effectively share what needs are not only identified, but those that are anticipated and most urgent; while also providing viable solutions to the issues identified. The question remaining is: will nursing leadership will merely note the assessment results, or make the time to take that action which is in the best interest of our patients and colleagues? This book is a must read for all present and future nurses!

This is a great book that follows like a research paper, but has interest and excellent explanations of our current nursing practice. Highly recommend for any RN that is going into advance practice or in a graduate program. Follows nicely.

Patricia Benner wrote a landmark book, "From Novice to Expert." In this book she follows through with advice to fellow nurse educators. Benner is always worth reading -- and taking to heart. A must have work for nurse educators, administrators and graduate students.

I was hoping the book would be more of a blue print on how to improve the profession. It would have been more helpful if there were tables and algorithms on how to get from where we are in nursing to where we need to go.
