I am a professional tutor and have recently acquired a couple of students who want to ace the ASVAB. I was thrilled to be offered this book on the Vine program. The ASVAB is different from the SAT, the ACT and the GED Tests, and is more of a test of critical thinking and cognitive reasoning, as well as knowledge. I've been poring over self help ASVAB books, trying to determine the best way to coach my students. This book is pretty good. It doesn't give an overview of the test, but from what I'm able to determine, the ASVAB requires a high level of reasoning ability going in. This book gives a nice sampling of test questions. If prospective ASVAB takers have good backgrounds in high school subjects, common sense, and reasonable practical skills, they should do OK. This book is ample reassurance. As far as providing diagnostics on remedial areas, maybe not so much. As a supporter of the US armed forces, I'm delighted that this test is rigorous and tough. As a tutor, I could wish the book was broken down into component areas a bit more, with suggestions on how to augment weaknesses.Contrary to the title, the ASVAB is not for dummies, though the questions give a great preview as to what to expect. I'd suggest using this book along with other materials. Several publishers put out in depth study guides for the ASVAB. For example, many adults have trouble with fractions, long division, and word problems. Get yourself a math book and brush up, then use this book to get an idea of the kinds of questions on the test.
I choose this rating of 5 starsbecause I really believe this is a must have book, weather utilizing it to get into the Military, or to brush up on your Logic skillsthis is a great Book, also love the way the learning matierial is layed out .....Simple.SincerelyShawn Holland
The ISBN 1118646312 (ASVAB For Dummies For Dummies, 1st ed.) is a black and white book that contains enough questions to sufficiently check the preparation for the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery. The content of its only 298 pages of a larger than the standard size for the series is clearly divided into 2 parts, 9 chapters, and 1001 multiple (4) choice questions. Some questions are preceded by a short description. Other include schematics from various disciplines. After the initial reading, it can be used just for practicing. The B&W schematics are simple and well drawn. The question numbers are boldfaced allowing to easier grasp the pages at 1st glance. The back pastedown (endpaper) contains a sealed envelope with a PIN code to access 1001 practice questions on the companion website. Approx. 27 pages of the book are shown by the .com's "LOOK INSIDE!" function. What cannot be seen is that the book is well printed on barely decent paper, and the flimsy cover, typical for the series, is prone to creasing.
I thought I was just buying an extra book, that I would most likely not put attention to. But, it was not. This book is filled with practice questions, which I got to study before hand thanks to the "2015 / 2016 ASVAB For Dummies". These two books makes a great combination. One to study and the other to test how far you have improved by testing yourself. I am glad I bought it. I recommend it to everyone who is thinking of taking the ASVAB or the AFQT. Just have in mind, that this book is all about questions, of course it will give you the correct answer in the back of it, but it will not go into detail as much as the "2015 / 2016 ASVAB For Dummies" book.
This test can be difficult for any type of person, so it pays to practice the questions.Even a gifted scholar can do poorly on sections that test one's clerical potential and sections that test one's ability to see a tool and know what it does. There are sections to trip up almost anybody and it's intended that way. That stated, the questions themselves aren't difficult. Nothing in this exam requires much time at all per question. For this reason, I think it's fair to say one can use this book exclusively as a study guide with a few exceptions.
I took my ASVAB back in 1984. It is required for anyone planning on enlisting in the military. What recruits aren't told is that you can take the test again after six months in hopes of a better score. Nor does the ASVAB commit you to joining the military, but recruiters will be persuasive anyway. While this test may not make anyone an English scholar for those who failed English in high school, it will give test takers the opportunity to show you what kind of questions are asked and how they are presented. Many of the questions in the various fields were asked of me so many years ago. I did poorly on the mechanical section and having this guide then would have helped me better then for that field.Topics covered are English vocabulary, paragraph comprehension, mathematics knowledge (fractions, algebra, geometry), arithmetic reasoning, general science, auto shop, mechanical comprehension, electronics information, assembling objects and figuring out how things work.Highly recommended for those scheduled to take the ASVAB and have a few months to prepare.
