I really liked the format, especially after looking at some other books. I looked at the XAM series, the Kaplan series and others at the bookstore before I purchased these. The XAM book had a bunch of mistakes/typos when I scanned through it so I decided on this one. I didn't have time to go through all of the material. My weakest points were Language Arts and Social Studies so I focused on those areas. I studied for about two weeks just reading everything and writing summaries of the material. Three days before the test I started with the practice tests online and I read the explanations of my mistakes. This is what helped me the most, going through the online practice. It is like the actual test. I only took the test once and passed with flying colors. I would recommend to study the areas that you are less familiar with to improve your overall score.
This study guide perfectly summarized all the core concepts in a way that helped me retain as much information as possible. I loved that there was more than one practice test and that you could choose between taking them on paper from the book or online at the REA website. This thing was a lifesaver.
It helped me accomplish my goal, which was passing the 4-8 Generalist exam. I'd suggest following the plan (pretest, study in deficient areas, retest, study again). Worked for me. The only criticism I had was that I felt it should have spent more time on probability questions. Good luck with the test!
I bought this book to prepare for my generalist test. I'd read reviews for it & figured it would help me. I had a solid month with it since I'd left my previous career to pursue teaching, and this book definitely measured up. It's a long read, painfully so, but it gives you all the information you need to pass.I had a month long study plan (with all day to study since I'm not currently working) & still had to break some portions in half! Don't let this discourage you, though; I ended up retaining more than I realized.I enjoyed the online tests...initially, but then I realized only the first generalist test had accurate competencies linked to it. The second generalist test only has one competency listed (32 I think) and it said I missed questions that were right. I think the online tests are goo to get familiar with the format, but take their supposed "scoring of where you need the most work" with a grain of salt.I took both of the practice generalist tests; I failed the first with a 66 and got a 73 on the second, which would be considered failing on the official test. I completed my content test April 13, 2015 and passed on my first try with a 256!Make sure you give yourself enough time to study and chill out a couple of days before hand. I know this sounds counterintuitive, but it seriously helps your brain relax, so all the information in the book can "soak" in.I studied for this test and the special education test at the same time; I'm taking the special education test 4/21/2015 and plan to review the REA book I bought for it once my scores come in!
This book could have been great. It has lots of great information, but falls short. I will share some of what I liked and didn't like about it.The Pros:-It is divided and covers all of the competencies for the TExES Generalist 111 test. There is so much information and it is like a crash course to retake middle school and brush up on your weak areas.-There are 2 practice tests. You can use a code from the front of the book to take the tests online. At the end of the book and also through a hyperlink, you can view the reasoning for the answers to each question on the test. This is awesome, as the practice questions in the TEA preparations do not have anything to explain the problem in the event that you got it wrong and don't know why/how they got the answer they got.The Cons:-There are lots of typos in the book. It seems to be an exceptionally high amount considering the fact what this book is written for.-The competencies that the practice tests refer to are incorrect in multiple places. If you get a problem wrong it may actually be a math problem that is listed as a science competency. That means more work for you to try to figure out which competency is actually the correct competency so you can learn the reasoning for the correct answer.-When you take the practice test the results may or may not be accurate. For my first test it gave me a variety of competencies to study (listing areas where you are strong, areas you should review and areas that you need the most work). For the results to show what I should study were totally bogus. There was only 1 competency listed as both my strength and my area that needs review. When I looked at the actual questions I got wrong, there were many different competencies involved.-I contacted the customer service concerning the problems with incorrect competencies and the issues with bogus areas to study. I was told that I would receive an email and a phone call from them, both of which I still haven't received.I am still studying for my test and will update the review once I get my results.UPDATE: I passed the test on my first try. I only used this book and the free guide from the TEA site. I would recommend it to a friend due to the explanations of the test questions and the practice tests.
Between this book, Quizlet, You Tube videos and another prep book I did pass. I'd definitely recommend using as many resources as possible for the exam. The more the better. I also purchased another book for Barnes and Nobles and that one was mostly exams. This book actually had a lot of remedial concepts that I had not studied in a long time...especially the math. That was the toughest part for me to test on math I hadn't seen since high school.
