This book is a wonderful extension of Ms. Temple's first book. She takes the student through many of the same aspects of drawing, but with a deeper focus on color (of course!). There is a concise study of color first. It is just enough, not too much. This is followed by 8 more chapters. These include: Line Drawing, Light, Shadow, and Color, Still Life Drawing, Drawing in Perspective, Drawing Landscapes, Drawing Animals, Drawing People, and Color Your Imagination.There is much use of white space for a pleasing presentation throughout the book. I do not mean that she uses blank areas to fill the pages; that is not the intention at all. It just makes it cleaner than her earlier work. Each chapter is laid out in a similar format, easy to read and easy to progress through. No big obstacles where the student will feel overwhelmed. The projects are fun and interesting. One is especially appealing, a water reflection landscape. No filler or fluff in this book.I also like how the imagination really matters. That is where I get stuck and where young students may need that added inspiration. I taught a class using some of Ms. Temple's first book. This book would be a great follow-up for a deeper class and I am certain I would learn something too!Now, should you buy the first book AND this one? Well, that would be a personal choice. The first one has some things this one doesn't (grid drawing, foreshortening, etc.) and this one has some aspects that the other one doesn't (more step by step pics of the process, separate chapter on drawing animals, etc.). If it were ME, I would be fine with just this book. If it were for someone who really wants to learn it ALL and doesn't have any knowledge of drawing, then both books would be just the ticket. We homeschool, and, as I'm not an artist myself, I was having some trouble with our art time. This book is really great. I've seen so many art books that LOOK good but don't really work in action. My daughter (age 10) opened this book and without my help began to draw some beautiful pictures that she had not been able to do before we got this book. I highly recommend it - it's like an art class without the high class fees!
My three granddaughters love to draw and I got this book to give to them. It is easy enough for them to understand and I can see the progress they are making. I've bought several drawing books from and they have all been good. In fact, some of the books I bought for my grandchildren, I ended up keeping myself because I draw, also. I haven't had time to draw in quite a few years and this is helping me to regain my skills.
Bought this for 6 year old because of rating. Its a good book but I feel it should be rated for older readers. Hopefully he will use some of the illustrations to draw shapes and keep the book for later years.
I purchased for my 10 year old grandson. The book is written and illustrated for older children. Good subject matter on choices of color but presented by using small pictures, going asfar as to include landscapes-very detailed drawings, and vocabulary not within his age group. Expensive book at $17.95 that a child would not appreciate.
I purchased this book for my daughter but unfortunately it is very basic. Watson's Course in pencil sketching is a better choice.
Great introduction to art - for all ages. A perfect sequel to the Drawing book by the same author. Encourages creativity while demonstrating the basic concepts and tools.
