I got this deck when chronicle.com was having its 30% off + free shipping "FRIENDS" code sale, in anticipation of our family trip to Long Island for Christmas. Before taking an almost-four-year-old on the plane, I packed lots of activities for him to do; but there will always be times when I either can't get something out because the plane is descending, or because he feels he has exhausted the potential of all the things in my backpack. This card deck is perfect for those times...which don't always occur in the plane, by the way--it worked for the car, the bus, the airport, etc.I did look through the deck before our trip and quickly sorted out the cards that a non-reader could do...this left approximately half the deck (this deck will grow with your child). When we needed an idea, I took a card off the top and ran with it. In most cases, it was just the kernel of the idea that we then adapted, but in all cases, the card provided the different direction or new thing that kept my son occupied and held a breakdown at bay. This would make a great gift, but it really is for the parent, not necessarily for the child traveler. Highly recommended.
My son loves to do these simple but educational experiments. This is an excellent and inexpensive gift for 4 - 6 year olds and their parents. In addition, my mother in law, a preschool teacher, has found these experiments to be fun to do in her school.
They are boxes of 52 playing-card-sized ideas cards for kids (and others). I've used them with children ages 3+, mainly ages 6-10. I am a scientist and very picky about these things. These sets are both fun and educational, and great jumping-off points for further exploration.
This is not a book. It is a deck of 52 playing cards. I'm incredibly organized, so I don't have a problem keeping them together but...how are you going to find this tiny box when you need it? And how much information can you fit on a card? Not much. The ideas are ...so-so. Not very interesting. This is supposed to be for ADULTS, yet they give ideas for things like fingerpainting, playing with play doh, Pin the Tail on the Donkey and other kids games...I'm with my kids all day doing that stuff! When I'm with my friends, no thanks.Because its a standard size deck of cards, there is very little room to write. So, they give you an idea but there are no instructions. If you aren't good at improvising and don't want to put a lot of thought into implementing the ideas here that you happen to like, don't bother because there is no help in this box for you! I have all the game books. This one I just don't care for.
My wife is a middle school science teacher and some of these cards will be cool options for her experiments.
The sleepytime cards are a terrific idea! I first read of the cards in a review on the best-seller-newest books and top ten list for children in our St. Louis POST-DISPATCH.My only complaint is that the 4 decks of cards I ordered were shipped along with my order of 3 bottles of Back to Basics Shampoo. The bottles were not sealed on their spouts with waterproof tape, thus leaking into the package containing the 4 decks of cards. These cards are intended as gifts to Mom's of little ones. One cardboard box was damaged. Thankfully the deck of cards in each cardboard box were sealed in plastic and O.K. after I wiped them dry.I sent a complaint to back when the shipment was received and have heard no response.Overall, the cards are a great idea.
I HAVE TO SAY I WAS SURPRISED THAT: "THE ENGLISH PATIENT" WAS INCLUDED IN THIS DECK, IT IS A CRAPPY FILM. HOW IS IT ROMANTIC???! OTHERWISE IT WOULD HAVE RECEIVED 5 STARS HANDS DOWN!TWO ADULTERERS FALLING IN LOVE AND ONE OR BOTH PERISHING (SAW THIS AS A TEEN) DID NOT TUG AT MY HEART STRINGS I WAS LAUGHING THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE FILM. I COULDN'T TAKE IT SERIOUSLY. I WAS PLEASED THAT THE CHARACTERS IN THE FILM WHO PARTICIPATED IN UNJUST INFIDELITY (PEOPLE WITH PEOPLE WHO DON'T CHEAT ON THEM YET THEY STILL CHEAT ON THEIR SPOUSE)THEN AGAIN I CAN'T STAND FILMS ABOUT INFIDELITY USUALLY.I SHOULD WATCH IT AGAIN FOR A LAUGH. I WONDER IF I WOULD FEEL DIFFERENTLY NOW AS AN ADULT? PROBABLY NOT!IT WAS A LONG DULL SLOW FILM FROM WHAT I RECALL.THIS IS NOT A BOOK AND I LIKE THAT QUALITY THE BEST! IT IS A DECK OF CARDS :)THEY ARE GREAT QUALITY, WITH A GLOSSY FINISH.THE DESCRIPTIONS CONVEY ENOUGH TO PEAK YOUR INTEREST. I HAVE ONLY SEEN A HANDFUL! I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING 1 OR 2 WEEKLY EVERY MONTH. AWESOME.I OWN 3 IN THIS SERIES ALREADY: I OWN THIS ONE OBVIOUSLY LOL:52 GREAT FAMILY FILMS.52 ADVENTURES IN NEW YORK CITY (EVEN STUFF INCLUDED THAT I DIDN'T KNOW OF, AND I AM A RESIDENT!52 WAYS TO STAY IN LOVE FOREVER (MAKES COMPLICATED COUPLE ISSUES SIMPLE, MY MOM AND SISTER REALLY LIKE IT)AND I HAVE 3 MORE ON THE WAY: I CHECKED THESE-- REVIEWS WERE RAVING :)52 Things to Try Once in Your Life (52 Series)52 Ways to Mend a Broken Heart (52 Series)52 Things to Try Once in Your Life (52 Series)IT IS AWESOME TO SEE SOMETHING IN A DECK OF CARDS INSTEAD OF SOME STANDARD BOOK. MAKES IT MORE FUN FOR AT A GLANCE AND GREAT FOR SHARING SIMULTANEOUSLY.*BONUS* IT INCLUDES THE TITLE CARD AND THE CLOSING CARD WITH THE LIST OF OTHERS AVAILABLE IN THE 52 SERIES. I NOTICE THAT NOT ALL ARE THE SAME, THERE IS A NEW FEW INCLUDED IN THE CLOSING CARD EVERY TIME, OTHERS IN THE SERIES THAT I DISCOVER EXIST AND CAN BE FOUND ON !
