I have been trying to learn how to knit for a few years now. My roomate at college tried to teach me how. The problem is that I don't know what to do on my knitting project, after I graduated and never see my roomate again. So I have a half-finished project that have been sitting in my basement for almost 2 years now. I picked up this book because it looked less intimidating than other knitting books. I started knitting right away once I got home. So far, I have done 2 projects and going to do some more! I LOVE THIS BOOK! It is the EASIEST knitting book EVER! Don't let the negative review throw you off. Get this book and start knitting already! :)
I am in my late 20's. I have read through a couple of "learn-how-to-knit" books. They have been so confusing and hard to follow. I bought this book for my 7 year old, but I used it more than her. All the projects are explained very well and the pictures are very helpful. Everything is simple and easy to follow. The kit comes with everything you need to complete a lot of the projects. For beginners it is a great start. Eventually, you would need to learn how to read patterns and more complicated instructions; but for now this book is a great start for young and old.
This kit is great. The illustrations and instructions are clear and easy-to-follow. I bought this kit about 6 months ago, with no prior knitting experience, and have been knitting like a fiend, ever since.I decided to go with a children's kit to make the learning curve a bit easier on myself. Many of the adult books I'd looked at launch straight into pattern-talk [(RS) k1, p2, *k2, p2] before one is even comfortable holding needles in their hands.I also liked that everything I needed to start was included and all of the projects use the same yarn (weight) and needle size. This is important because I could focus on just learning, rather than picking the wrong weight yarn or needles at a store and worrying whether the pattern would still size correctly or not. While the yarn and some of the projects may not be exactly what adults are interested in, the skills learned in these projects are the fundamental building blocks for becoming a capable knitter. It comes with a couple hanks of yarn, a set of size 8 bamboo needles, a crochet hook, a blunt yarn needle and a couple of buttons. The only thing you need to provide is a needle and thread for sewing on the buttons and scissors. This book got me hooked on bamboo needles, granted they're perhaps not as fast as metal ones. They're easier on the hands and less likely to unintentionally slide out of your stitches, which can be a bit traumatizing when you're first learning, than metal ones. The only minor downside is having to wind the yarn into balls, which is a bit time consuming and unnecessary. Most yarn is sold in skeins and good knitting stores will wind your yarn for you.
I'm a 37 year old mother. I bought the book because the adult learn how to knit books where just too complicated. This book is easy to understand, the illustrations are easy to follow...the project are cute. The needles, latch hook, buttons and the book itself are all of quality.Makes a great gift for a young girl. This has also been a nice way of bonding with my 11 year old...We've enjoyed the book immensely.
I have a slightly older version of this that I bought about 4 years ago. My rationale was that if it was written in a way that a child could learn, then SURELY I could, too! And I was right. I am a self-taught knitter, thanks to this book. The instructions, photos and projects are great! So good, in fact, that I gave it to a friend so she could learn to knit (which she also did successfully). Now I need another one to give to yet another person who wants to learn.I completely recommend this book - have fun with it!
Ok I am 32 and a avid crocheter...but I have allways wanted to learn to knit. I think I have purchased every kit and book combo out there plus the knitting for dummies book ...none worked for me. My last hope and the fact that I had a 40% off coupon made me give one last try with this book ..AHHHH success in less than 20 minutes I was casting on and knitting. Please, this is the easiest , simplest book I have found and trust me I have spent a $$$$ on trying to learn to knit. Also I LOVE love the bamboo needles included in this kit ( I allways found the metal ones too slippery) The text and hand drawn pictures make learning SUPER EASY !The few things that I found annoying were minor quibbles:1) This is a basic book... very basic .I think you will need a more advanced book once your skills progress. I would have liked more tools and instructions on shaping, pattern reading and a few more advanced techniques.2) The yarn included in kit is in the most annoying skeins that must be wound into balls before use or they will end up in a big kink!I say buy it and learn to finally knit !
My grandmother tried and tried to teach me to knit when I was 7, 10, 12...but I never learned to cast on, purl, or cast of. Pretty big gaps in my knowledge! I've been crocheting for years, and I decided this is the year to learn to knit (now that I'm 54!) So I bought a copy of this book and gave it one final try--and it worked! I've been knitting all weekend! Purling and everything! One of the big pluses is that the yarn and the needles and the pattern all work together, so you aren't running around trying to find what needles to buy or what weight yarn goes with what needles. The latest version of the kit has very attractive variegated purple yarn plus it includes a carrying case for your needle. So, now that I've taught myself to knit with this book why didn't I give it a 5? Well, they do a good job of teaching you the skills you need to do basic knitting, but they don't give you the skills to get to the next level. Specifically, they don't teach you how to read a pattern. It's reasonable *not* to include a sweater, since that's a whole nother level of difficulty. But it would have been helpful to show us how to get from the narrative explanation of a pattern to a standard pattern using abbreviations and symbols.Nevertheless, I think this kit is a winner.
