Great pictures and information. Why only a 3-star review? First, a minor criticism - the author uses the same common name for many of the insects. Granted, common names can be confusing when trying to communicate with others, but it's more confusing to give the same common name for five different bugs who clearly are different species. The biggest criticism is a doozy and very important to everyone: the book needs a key for identification. There is a color-coded system of the different insect groups, but you must know what the group looks like before you can narrow down the search. Not a good resource for the novice. I teach an introductory college biology course, and we use this book as a field guide. I have created generalized sketches of each color-coded group to help my students key out organisms. I'm hoping the second edition will make these improvements, because it has great potential.

One of the criteria upon which I judge the usefulness of a field guide, is the number of commonly found local species, and this book is excellent in that it covers over 440 species. The book was written for the North Woods where I live, and using it I'm able to identify many of the insects with which I come in to contact. Another criteria is the usefulness of the index. This book has a good and useable index. I appreciate that included is the general time period (months) when a certain critter can be found. Examples are the Wedge-shaped Beetle which can be found in August, and the Brown Mantidfly from June to September.I have found the North Woods Naturalist Series is presented in a very user friendly format. Morphology terminology at the beginning of the book, excellent photographs of the subject material, general information regarding each of the families of insects (appearance and biology), key characteristics of specific entities, size bar, and handy size for carry or storage.I like this book and recommend it without reservation.Larry Lilly---

This is the perfect guide to stick in your backpack if you're a bug enthusiast in the upper Midwest. I live a bit west of the target range, but so far the book has included most of the insects my son and I have found on our explorations. The guide is written in an informal, friendly style that won't scare away amateurs or young folks, and includes plenty of interesting facts about behavior and habitat. The photos are small, but beautifully recognizable; the insects look the way you'd expect to find them in the woods, not like pinned specimens. I especially like the color-dot organizational system, which allows you to flip to the right section just by checking the back cover. No need to consult the table of contents or the index (although those are handy too)! This is my new favorite guide.

Jeff did a great job in compiling and picturing the insects we see in the north central US. So many times books are written for the northeast or east; they just don't cut it for those of us with the climate and growing conditions we experience here.
