What a cool book! Used often as a required textbook for Philosophy 101 classes, this is a valuable reference for a lifetime. Most of the book is multi-page excerpts from some of the great thinkers in human history. Plato, Laozi, James, Martin Luther King, Engels, Nietzsche, Dalai Lama, Richard Dawkins, Kuhn, on and on. It's neatly organized into twelve chapters; within each there are about six excerpts from different books with an insightful introduction and reading questions. Chapters include Is There a god? Is Knowledge Possible? What Am I? and other non-trival questions.Reading this comprehensive anthology gives a broad literate education without the months (years?) it would take to read through all the original texts, if you could somehow know what they'd be. A worthwhile reference and a jumping off point into some classic books of human thought.
I bought this for a community college philosophy course. I read the titles and selections prior to the first class. I dropped the class based on the exclusion of content in this book. There are some worthwhile readings from Plato, Aristotle, and Thoreau. But, there's a lot of Communism, Socialism, Buddhism, Islam, and Hispanic racism (La Raza). If there were a similar entry promoting Caucasians, you could guaranty the book would be banned.I wouldn't have minded the inclusion of ideas I don't embrace had opposing viewpoints such as Free Market, Democratic Republic, and Judeo-Christian writings also been included. In my mind it's not a fair representation of the great philosophies from history. More modern and extremist views compared to historically tried and true writings.

Not what I had expected. Thought it would be a good side by side comparison of the different traditions, yet it was not..
Got the book for a class. It got the job done. It also happens to be genuinely interesting. It's the full package.
