Starting in the early 1940s, Anne, now a successful, middle-aged writer, has returned to Prince Edward Island for an extended visit. On a whim, she s agreed to write a play for part of the White Sands Hotel s summer stock season, but Anne is forced to admit that the play is nothing more than a way to take her mind off the troublesome recent events in her life. When a long-hidden secret is discovered under the floorboards at Green Gables, it provides a distraction of its own. As Anne struggles to complete the play, she delves into long-buried memories, reliving the troubled years before she arrived as an orphan at the Cuthberts farmhouse. Over the course of one remarkable summer, Anne Shirley discovers the truth about her parents, the origins of her quest for kindred spirits, and the roots of her brilliant, magical imagination.

This is a dreadful book. The author worked on the TV Anne series and seems to feel he can retroactivly change not only her back story but the very character of Anne Shirley herself. In the original Anne og Green Gables in chapter 5 when Anne is telling Marilla her life story Anne says very clearly that hermother died when Anne was three months old and her father died four days after her mother from fever. At the beginning of A New Beginning the author has Anne remembering happy scenes where Anne is old enough to read and goes to a school where her mother is her teacher. So much for being orphaned at an early age. The author admits to writing the book by adapting it from a movie script. That is how and why Anne is made to conform with the author rather then have the author conform with the Anne Shirley we all know and love. It is a fatal flaw. Don t waste your time or money. You will only be disappointed or outraged ... probably both.

I have read nothing in the book but the blurb about it and am already put off. I think it is an insult towards Lucy Montgomery. If Kevin Sullivan has actually read any of Lucy Montgomery's actual sequels then he'd know Anne has six children, still lives on PEI and is a housewife, not a famous writer. From my calculations, Anne was at least 40 in 1918 so by 1940 she would be at least 75. The blurb made it sound like she was 35! Why would she want to leave her precious PEI or come back to find something under Green Gables floorboards? I haven't even read the book but I can tell you, it won't be worth the money.

After reading all the Anne books for the umpteenth time, I also downloaded this and really wish I hadn't.....after only a few pages it was obvious that the author didn't pay much attention to Lucy Maud's characterisation of Anne for his book and paid scant regard and attention to the books by Lucy Maud, because the chronology was all wrong and the characterisation was, at best, poor. Kevin Sullivan had obviously never even heard of Rainbow Valley and Rilla of Ingleside - the last two books by Lucy Maud about Anne and her family as they grew up.I agree with the other reviews on this book, in as much as the basic facts about Anne's history are incorrect - not only those claiming that she remembers her mother (which would be impossible as it is stated in Lucy Maud's books her mother died when she was only a few weeks old), but also simple facts such as the names, ages and number of children she had.I couldn't finish the book as it had no basis in Anne's previous characterisation and everything I read clashed with the stories written by Lucy Maud Montgomery, which I love.
