In a few weeks I am going for the third time to take my certification exam for CCA. I missed passing it twice due to the fact that Hurricane Katrina hit just a month after finishing the entire AHIMA CCA courses. Being away from the material for over 2 years and not being able to find a job because so many were lost in Biloxi and never recovered, I have no practical experience. I had no idea where to even begin to study using all of my books. Thanks to the excellent writing of this book, I have hope that this time I can pass as the book helps you to relearn.I took my test for the third time and passed!! I truly believe that it is due to this book. The book helped me to relearn what I had forgotten and did it in such a helpful and thoughtful manner. It helped me to finally focus on what I needed to study and I am so grateful to the author for putting in the "I think I can" attitude. I did pass by doing it one question at a time.
ICD-10-CM/PCS has been delayed AGAIN to October 1, 2015, therefore CCA exam candidates will continue to be tested on ICD-9-CM/PCS (per AHIMA: [...] This 2014 Review Guide ONLY contains study material for ICD-10. If you are planning on testing before ICD-10 is officially released, then you will want the 2013 Professional Review Guide for the CCA Examination which contains study material on ICD-9, etc.As for the content in both the 2013 and 2014 versions the Professional Review Guide for the CCA Examination books, I think they are a helpful resource for reviewing everything I learned in the AHIMA Coding Basics program. It gives you an easy to follow sample 10-week study plan and each chapter covers the different competencies on the CCA exam. It also contains a mock quiz, mock exam, and appendices with info on pharmacology and labs. It also gives you an access code for [...] where you will have access to further study material. All in all, I'm happy with this purchase. I'll try to remember to post an update if/when I pass the CCA exam!
I passed! I ordered this book and worked with it for a month before my exam. I cant say enough how helpful it was. I dont believe I could have passed without it, and I just graduated from an 18 month college program for billing and coding. If you are taking this exam buy this book!
The PRG for CCA 2009 was a valuable tool to review and study for the CCA Exam. PRG covered all topic areas and provided references to other books (most of which I had) to read more about the question topic. The CD-ROM practice exams helped me pace my exam question response rate. I just completed an online medical coding training course so most of the topics were still fresh in my mind. The author should consider having a few more questions on medical records. I would recommend the PRG as a study guide to be used in conjunction with other medical coding course books or materials.
I purchased this Professional Review Guide for the CCA,2010 with the hopes that it would aid me in passing the exam.It did. I loved using the CD that came with the guide. It was very helpful in preparing for the test in areas not totally covered in my classes.
If I hadn't been made aware of this guide, the exam would have been a complete disaster. Not only does it offer a wide choice in the type of questions encountered in the exam, but explanations of some of the more obscure concepts are simple and concise. I can't recommend the guide enough to anyone sitting the CCA exam. I also bought the 2008 edition thinking that the questions would be completely different when in reality about 95% are the same.
The book and cd are a excellent study guide for the preperation for taking the exam.
Overall, this is an excellent product - I thought I was studying the right areas, but this book quickly refocused where I really should be studying.Two significant problems:1. When using the CD, my computer recognizes the program as a "TROJAN" and I have to disable my antivirus program.2. The book and CD are chockfull of typo's and incorrectly typed information. A few of the answers don't seem correct based on ICD-9-CM and CPT book descriptions.Unfortunately, I cannot locate anywhere on the internet where there is a addendum of corrections to the book.All in all, it's worth the money, but the publisher needs to proofread before publishing.
