I was in a bit of a quandary as to how to rate this book. I bought the book and the companion "Trigonometry for Dummies" to refresh my trig skills, long rusted after nearly 50 years of little use. Both books are really quite good although the workbook could be more comprehensive. The big problem with this workbook, and to a lesser extent with the "Trigonometry for Dummies" book, is the large number of errors and typos in the book. One works out a very complicated identity problem only to find that the stated problem is different from the problem answered due to typographical errors. I don't think I went seven pages without finding an error. Most of the errors were changed minus or plus signs. This made maintaining confidence in the book very difficult. One would think that a big publisher like Wiley would employ competent proofreaders. I would also expect them to have an errata sheet somewhere on their web page. But, nooo, nothing helpful there at all except a glossary they forgot to put in the main trig book.Overall, both books were very helpful, with the exception of not having a lot of confidence that the answer to the problem I was trying to solve would be correct.
If you have never done trigonometry before, Sterling gives a gentle introduction. She assumes some previous acquaintance with geometry and simple algebra and analytic geometry. But not too much of the latter, so don't let this scare you off.The trig concepts are slowly introduced and explained at some length. With plenty of examples. Now, you really should tackle as many of the problems as possible. Yes, it takes time. But if you want a solid, fluid grasp of trig, you have to spend the time to familiarise yourself with sine, cosine, tangent, cotangent, secant and cosecant. There are certainly numerous relationships between these functions. You don't have to know all of them. But being acquainted with them, and knowing where to look for formulae in a book like this is useful.
There is absolutely no way that this item should have a 4.5 star rating. I am giving it 1 star for the errors alone. There must be 40-50 errors (by errors I mean wrong answers to problems) in this book. Normally I would keep track, but in this case there were just too many. This book shouldn't have been allowed to go into print like this and Mary Jane Sterling should be ashamed to show her face in her classroom. Completely unacceptable. I'm glad she didn't write a book on how to wire a house! I did every single problem in Michael Kelley's Humongous Book of Algebra problems and his Humongous Book of Geometry problems. Between the two books there may have been 6 or 7 errors and there were 1,000+ problems in each. I did every problem in this book too, as Mr. T would say "I pity the fool that has never had Trigonometry before and relies on this book" - you're in for a world of hurt if you can't identify the errors.Furthermore, explanations are mediocre at best. The Trigonometric Identities section was the only redeeming quality. I don't doubt she's a good mathematician, but she's no writer. I'm not going to detail all of this the errors alone warrant a one star review.Edit: I took a college trig course after reading this book. Skip this altogether, get a textbook, and work out of the text book. I can't overstate enough how lacking this book is compared to a text book.
I need this book as a reference book for seventh grade math since written on a level that seventh graders can comprehend. Additionally, the examples in the workbook are applicable and adequate for seventh graders. It seems that .com is my ‘turn to place’ to find books that I need. It is a total waste of time to try to find books locally, either their web site are convoluted or misrepresent themselves to draw you into their establishments. I give .com an ‘Atta boy.’
If you are looking for extra trig explanations, this workbook is o.k. But I'm a teacher and wanted it for extra practice for my students there aren't really enough problems for that. So far I haven't used it at all.
Bought this for my daughter who struggles with math. She felt that the Geometry for Dummies helped so we bought this with the workbook. She says it helps. Since I have no memmory of my Trig class, I am glad that this is a good substitute. Whew!
The price was reasonable, the shipping was professionally and promptly done. It is in good condition for a used volume, and it makes a nice resource to use on an informal study basis (I'm not afraid to wear it out with use!)
If you go with the Trig for Dummies book I would strongly recommend getting the Workbook. While the Trig for Dummies book contains some problems to work through and of course you can work along with the examples, the Workbook contains more problems to solve and after all (at least for me) the only way to really learn Trig, or any other math subject, is to work problem after problem. While more problems is always better this Workbook contains a decent number to get you started and while it it does not sync up with the Trig for Dummies book chapter for chapter it is easy enough to stay in sync.
