I originally posted this information to the audioengineering subreddit, but I thought it might be appreciated information for prospective buyers as well. These are the differences that I observed between the fifth edition of the book and the sixth (this) edition of the book.* Chapter titled "Control of Interfering Noise" renamed to "Sound Isolation and Site Selection."* Aforementioned chapter removes section "Noise Standards and Specifications" (about health/safety) and replaces it with ~12 pages related to site selection.* New chapters titled "Sound Isolation: Walls, Floors, and Ceilings" and "Sound Isolation: Windows and Doors" in addition to the preexisting chapter "Noise Control in Ventilating Systems."* Chapter "Acoustics of Listening Rooms" renamed to "Acoustics of Listening Rooms and Home Theaters," and adds sections "Listening Room Plan" and "Home-Theater Plan."* New chapter titled "Acoustics of Home Studios."* New chapter titled "Acoustics of Large Recording Studios."* New design samples in chapter "Acoustics of Control Rooms."Overall, there are approximately 100 pages of new information. It's enough that I'm glad I paid the extra $5.00 or whatever to get the latest edition, but I wouldn't bother rushing out to buy 6e if I already had 5e; there are so many other books that I could buy with that money.
Although it covers the same topics as the 3rd Edition which I bought 14 years ago, the facts and description have improved allowing easier comprehension. I have not gone through the 6th Edition in minute detail, but I think it is good book on Acoustics. The documentation with supporting illustrations allow easy understanding on the subject.
Wow. This book is a brain melter. I want to learn about acoustics to properly build recording and mix rooms. This book is heavy on theory, math, practice, experience, science...it's a lot. I love it though. I feel like I could read this book for a decade and still not absorb all the info. A lot of it is not practical for my situation, but that's fine. I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it. A good starting place, but if you're just trying to build a better room, this book is not where I'd start, or stop. Still an amazing resource though.
The book is really loaded with usefull information, not only about acoustics but also about our perception of hearing/However it is frustrating when he explains (for example) how to make tube traps from cement pipes, but gives no details of the dimensions. So he takes up so far and then he does not give suficient details of how to complete the job.One star less for lack of details.
This book is ideal for the individual who has never had interest in the physics of sound! It goes from 101 all the way to a 600 level class! The scenarios covered in this book encompass almost every possible common shape of a room or facility except for odd shapes such as ovals and circles. The knowledge imparted in this book will help any one improve the sound of their space when implemented . This is a textbook so don't expect novel like story telling. Study this and you are on your way to being an acoustician!
Exactly what I was looking for. It explains in depth the properties of acoustics and sound waves. Reads like a textbook, but that's ok. It's not supposed to be a bedtime story.
Extremely well written and while it is quite technical, it is still written to be understood by anyone with a drive to learn about acoustics
