A great series on its own right, and with this being the first book in the LN (Light Novel) series it may seems confusing but keep in mind that they're giving you information you'll need to remember for the rest of the series (I believe the 17th LN was recently released in Japan as of writing this 4/20/16).I highly suggest if you buy this and enjoy it, get the "Honor Student at Magic High" manga as it will give you more insight to the world.

So let me first say that, yes I am a fan of this series and thus I've read the fan translations of the books through #14 and watched the anime several times. The thing that I like so much about this series despite its flaws, is that the author took the time to clearly outline how magic works and how it has influenced the world since the late 90's. Then he uses the system he developed for magic and how the world has developed to spin a tale about a collection of characters. Granted, they're not perfect (quite a few of them can be generalized within the first five minutes) and they can act trope-ish from time to time; however, I'd argue that when they're combined with the world the author has created, the series becomes quite compelling. The two biggest problems I have with this series is that the anime really didn't do the siblings thoughts, feelings, and even actions in one brief scene justice - and since it came out before this series was translated, it will put the characters in a worse light then they deserve. The second is that the author beat around the bush explaining how the siblings came to live together and why Tatsuya is the way he is - this doesn't happen until book eight. Once he does explain things, then I felt like the siblings can viewed in a much better light.

Unlike a few multi part novels set in a magical and science fiction world, Irregular at Magic High School, starts off fast. It doesn't use a key action set piece like other series but rather eases into seeing the numerous characters interact with each other. I found myself not bored with how this started. Perhaps it is because the way that it is handled reminded me of how it is in real school in which you have the base excitement of a new school year with people willing and ready to talk and interact with each other. Perhaps what benefited this the most was that the writer had the key characters immediately enter into a student organization (student council) immediately upon starting. This immediately gave them a clear goal to tackle and also opened the doors for a few more issues to tackle. This helped to build the school up into something more than just a standard setting but into something that could grow and evolve as it is being further developed. For example, we immediately see how the world has affected the school, the two class system in the school has affected it as well as its students, as well as some of the ways that the school can bypass the way the world works. Its really good.Overall the book is a fantastic addition to the genre. The writing is pretty good with, at my count, only three obvious typos in the 208 pages. Color pages had translated text, and an afterword from the author and Reki Kawahara was provided.

I love how detailed the author goes into the world of magic. Rather than saying "shut up it's magic," there's a thorough technological system behind it. Also the characters are amazing.

As a fan of this series I'm very glad that the light novel is being translated into English and I will be purchasing all of them as they come out.The only thing I didn't like was the same problem that the "unofficial" online translation had. Some of the sentences were translated too literally from Japanese, resulting in some awkward phrasing throughout the novel. In some ways, this LN is better than the manga or the anime. You get much more details about what the characters are thinking. In some ways the manga is better in that with the pictures you get more of the emotion of the characters. And, in some ways the anime was better because you got pictures and action. So, for me, this LN compliments the other two story formats. I'm eagerly awaiting the next LN. There is such a long way to go with this story!

It was very good. This is a story I can get behind. It leaves enough unanswered about the protagonists backstory that it makes me want the next volume to find out more. I have already watched the anime, but a few of the terminology was very difficult to follow without more in depth exposition which the light novel gives and had enough extra that I'm not bored going over things I've already watched. I would recommend this to both people who have watched the anime and newcomers to the series.

Great series it's just a shame they waited this long to finally publish a English version. This is a great series I'm actually surprised on how detailed the author tries to be in regards to how magic in this universe works. I have enjoyed all 16 of the translated volumes my only gripe is that they waited so long to publish an official version seeing it's been translated for years now. That and since it is now licensed I will have to wait 3 years for new content because I doubt translators are going to waste time translating a story that will be published in English in a few years.

If you are a fan of Harry Potter Series, Ranger Apprentice Series, Brotherband Series, Percy Jackson Series, Olympians Series, and the Kane Chronicles then add this to your reading list. The author masterly bends action, suspense, intrigue, and science fantasy into a hero's journey type story. I'll agree that this is the set up volume of the Light Novel where he develops an understanding of the science fantasy but he does an outstanding explanation of how magic and science has blended in a believable way. I recommend you buy this for your collection because you will read it over and over.
