This is a very readable book - Bonney puts words together well. Not a "must have" in a beekeeper's library but a good general discussion of relevant topics. Assumes basic beekeeping knowledge. Overlaps with his beginner's book (Beekeeping: a Complete Guide); this would be aptly titled "Your Second Year as a Beekeeper."
In the past year I have borrowed from the library all the books I could find about beekeeping . This is one I plan to add to my personal library.
Hive Management written by Richard Bonney is awesome! This is not intended to be your first bee book, however I have read two other books and started my bees just under 1 year ago, so this was perfect timing. It's an easy read and makes sense for the non-PHD bee keeper. The only negative is there's not many pictures, but I would highly recomend this book to anyone with bees!
A good all round book. The chapters lay it out for the reader, and if that reader is like me you will get a better understand of bees and their needs.I suggest this book to anyone who is thinking about getting a few hives for the backyard BEFORE they do. Although bee keeping is a enjoyable passtime, there are things that need to be considered and this book will equip the reader with what they need to know. Good evening reading.
Since '96 I've kept bees both as a small-time hobbyist, working full-time for beekeepers with 1000+ hives, and I now make a significant part of my living from about 50 intensively managed hives. I've also read most of the beekeeping books over the years. I think this book of Bonney's is the best overall book, the one I give to friends that want to learn about beekeeping. A lot of other books dumb things down way too much and also assume that you're going to buy everything that can be bought (e.g. making all your increase by purchases instead of splitting your own hives). Although I'd fault it for not providing information beyond the very beginning level, I do think Flottum's book is really good (with great pictures), but if you don't need your hand held quite so much, and if you want to at least read a little bit beyond the basics, then I recommend Bonney's book. Another group of books get too caught up in pet theories and personal biases. Conrad's book is terrible in this respect. I like that Bonney's book sticks mostly to the things that every beekeeper ought to know, discusses different ways of doing things, and has a reasonable degree of objectivity. Bonney's book isn't amazing, but it's a solid first (or second) read for an intelligent reader.
As the first bee book out of the box which I'd ordered, I read this book from cover to cover in one sitting. Richard Bonney's knowledge, experience and dry humour make it an engaging read. Richard has some strong opinions on beekeeping and I don't believe that any novice beekeeper could go far wrong (especially those in the N.E. of the United States) by following his advice. Having said that, Richard himself makes it plain that what works for one beekeeper may not necessarily work for his immediate neighbour and always endeavors to present alternative methods for given tasks, even though he may not actually recommend using them. The main strengths of this book though, are Richard's obvious experience and his enthusiasm for his bees. Owning this book is like having a mentor by your side when you visit your hives and will certainly increase your confidence and comfort levels if you happen to be a beginning beekeeper and probably add to your knowledge-base of bee handling procedures, even if you're an "old hand".Thank you, Richard!
Published in 1990, this slim volume shows its age and is of little use to today's beekeepers. For example, although the varroa mite is mentioned in an appendix, no effective method of treating is given because the parasite had only recently appeared in the U.S.This book would have been of use to new beekeepers in the early 1980s but much less so today.
This book has good information on how to take good care of your hives during the winter and early spring. This is not a beginners book. This book goes one step past the beginners books to help you manage strong & healthy hives through all of the seasons. This book answered most of my questions that the beginners books did not. This book Should be read during the fall of your first year beekeeping so you can be knowledgeable & prepared for the winter & spring. I recommend this book for any one in their first couple years of beekeeping.
