We were on vacation at the Outer Banks when we bought this book. Every natural thing that we had a question on was covered in this book (including the Atlantic Sharpnose sharks that they were catching at the end of Avalon Fishing Pier). The book is written in a natural, humorous and engaging style so that you will want to read it from cover to cover, unlike any other field guide we have used. It is definitely written by authors who are extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the subject of beach ecology. For anyone who is interested in up to date facts about any aspect of beach ecosystems, or if you just need to identify the shells you find on the beach, this book is for you.

I just got this book yesterday and have not been able to put it down. Wonderful color pictures of everything you might see when walking on a beach in the Carolinas. (Animals, shells, plants, debris and detritus, and even the way the beach looks at different times) Loved the extra data connecting animals to their relatives. And the "Did You Know?" on each page has delightfully interesting information that many experienced beachcombers would not know. I would love a class set for my middle school science classes. Outstanding book!

Beautiful illustrations. Informative descriptions. I am a volunteer member of a turtle patrol in SC and we have all either purchased this book or borrowed it from each other. A must have if you care to be informed about our beaches.

If you carry only one book on Coastal Georgia's plant and animal life, this can be it. Extremely comprehensive for identification and comparison, you will find chapters covering everything from what you can find in tide pools, or attached to pier pilings, or creepy crawling in the sand or tidal mud. Great color pictures help identify the large variety of shore and sea birds, mollusks, shells, plants, and strange things. The book opens with a large chapter describing in photos and text many things you never noticed about the beach and it's important features. Could only wish that it was spiral bound making it easier to use.

If you are looking for books about beaches, shells, wildlife, ocean inhabitants...well, let's just say, you can't find any better than Living Beaches by the Witheringtons! I have their Florida, Georgia and Carolinas versions and they are fantastic reads and the go-to books for anyone who loves beaches. I wish I had their jobs - I'd wake up everyday with a smile on my face :)

I was looking for an easy to use guide for an upcoming trip to the Outer Banks. We homeschool our son and I wanted something that would pique his interest and be easy for me to navigate while I taught him. This book is wonderful! It is paperback, but has a thicker cover than most paperbacks. All of pages are thick and glossy. All pages in the book are actual color photographs of the specimens, not a black and white drawing. When I opened the box my first reaction was "Wow, these are really nice quality and definitely worth the money." These aren't cheap flimsy books that will fall apart in 6 months. I bought this book and "Seashells of Georgia and the Carolinas" by the same authors. The seashell section of this book was so complete that I really didn't need to buy the separate title, but anywho, we love seashells and it will get some good use. The layout is really nice too. Each section of the book names the family of creatures, names its relatives, explains identifying features, names the different types, explains their habitat, and features a "Did You Know" snippet at the bottom of each page. As a matter of fact, I enjoyed looking at it so much that I started reading it the night I got it.If you are looking for an easy, concise, well written, well-documented book with nice color photos that explains beach life in an easy to understand manner this is the book for you. Now grant it, I haven't had a formal biology class in years, and there were some terms used that I wasn't familiar with, but it's so well written that you can pretty much figure out what the author is saying. The only thing that would really make this book out of this world, is if it were ring bound so I can flip the pages over. This is an excellent guide to take down to the beach!

This is an excellent book! It was recommended to me by Environmental Education instructors from the local county park, and it was well worth it. The photos are great and it's so nice to have a book focused on my local region, rather than the entire Atlantic coast.

This beautifully written and photographed guide is a must for anyone living beside or just visiting the beaches of Georgia and the Carolinas. This lifetime compilation of beach-combing lore presented in such handy and readable form seems guaranteed to peak the interest and satisfy the curiousity of even the most casual beach goer. Best of all this handy encyclopedia answers all questions about beach phenomenom from plants and animals, shells and crustaceans, birds and reptiles to the smallest ripple in the sand.
