I liked that the pictures are simply drawn so you can add your own details and shading. While I don't really have a thing for shells I wanted the pics of the turtles and seahorses. It was fun though to get out my small collection of shells that I've accumulated from vacations to get some ideas for the shell colors and patterns. My only reason for deducting a star is that when the pictures are complete they seem too busy. I enjoyed coloring all the individual things, especially the seaturtles, but I find the end result looks a little overwhelming.
The designs are intricate and pretty and my 4yo loves this book. That said, it has double sided designs (versus one design per page) which annoys him because he then has to choose between which side he will display once he's done #4yoproblems. One thing that annoys me is that there are no perforations to rip the pictures out once they are finished, so often times they get ripped and you know how that goes with a 4yo #momproblems. In reality this is probably a better book for older children or adults.
I'm a big fan of Ruth Heller's work and this is very similar. The patterns are clear and lovely. For me it's more about design than the natural world. This book fits the bill.
