If you're looking for a quick guide to identifying the few snakes in the U.S. which are venomous, you can't go wrong with Scott Shupe's U.S. Guide To Venomous Snakes And Their Mimics, which pairs full-color photos and range maps with discussions of each species and subspecies by region. Author Scott Shupe has been working with snakes for over thirty years in Florida as a professional naturalist specializing in herpetology: if there's only one book on the topic to be purchased for a library collection, make it his.
BackgroundI live on 7 + acres with a lot of forest, woods and a pond. I heard about snakes in the area, and I wanted to be well versed with what was a danger and endemic to my region.OrganizationThe book is well organized covering the United States by region. It shows a distribution map of what snakes live in the respective areas. The details of the snakes, their behavior and toxicity/lethality are covered in a straightforward manner. I determined that there are two snakes that I have to look out for. Now, I'm better prepared for not only my backyard but wherever I travel.ConclusionGreat easy reference. Especially, great is that I have the Kindle version that works on a Kindle Fire and Apple iPad.Highly recommend.
I originally ordered this for one of my friends who roams the high desert looking for Indian artifacts. Spring is snake time, so I thought this would come in handy for her. I was so impressed with it, I ordered one for myself also, since our yard backs up to a forest. It is a great informational guide.
Extremely informational, and helpful. This gift very distinctively, clearly articulated, facts about the poison snakes throughout america; if you own a house, go to parks, live by grasslands, desserts or lakes, or rocky mountains - Than you need to read this.
My husband is working on getting his venomous permit here in Florida and this book will come in handy to help him learn more information on all the different snakes he will be able to handle.
As a wildlife enthusiast, I found this book to be very informative and the photography to be excellent. It has really helped me identify a few snakes in my area ( especially living in the country) when I wasn't quite sure what they were. I was able to find the snakes quickly in this easy to read book. I would recommend this book time and time again to anyone that loved outdoors or studied reptiles, etc.
Great condition. One crease in one page (possibly from storage) but no markings. Great condition.
Useful and Informative when you like the outdoors. I happen to like snakes as well.
