In Budd Titlow's beautiful book, "Seashells: Jewels from the Ocean" the first sentence is:"I grew up in the mountains, but my heart has always yearned for the sea." That is me all over again. As a child I spent part of each summer at my grandparents' house on Fenwick Island, DE and as an adult at Bethany Beach, DE each summer. I love the ocean and the gifts it gives up to us. In this exquisite book, not only are there pictures on each page, but plenty of text to read about the shells and the mollusks who make them. There are whole chapters on the classification and types of mollusks (100,000 species known so far)and new species are being found yearly. Next comes the anatomy of mollusks. Squid can grow up to 50 feet, but it is suspected that there are 100 foot squid out there. The myth of the man-eating giant clam is debunked. There are giant clams, but they can only open their shells 6 inches. If you want to learn about seashells and if you collect them and want to learn more about them or to learn their classification, this is the perfect book. I consider it a coffee table book just because of its beautiful cover, but it is also a book to be read over and over again and the pictures one can never tire of seeing. You can learn the life history and behavior of mollusks and distribution and their ties to humans. It is a wonderful book to learn from while gazing over the exquisite photographs. It has a small index and other references at the back. This really isn't a spoiler, because it's right in the beginning of the book and isn't any secret information, but the best place in the U.S. to hunt for shells is on Sanibel Island in Florida.I highly recommend this book for summer reading and learning and for year-round enjoyment.
Seashells: Jewels from the Ocean is a beautiful book to have, either as a coffee table book, or just a book to sit down and read for pleasure. The photography is fantastic and the descriptions of all the different shells is very interesting. I am really glad I purchased this book.
This book is full of exquisite photos of shells! There is plenty of information about the shells as well. This is a gift for my sister but I'm putting it on MY WISHLIST. Perfect for a coffee table book!
This book is absolutely beautiful. It is also very interesting to read. After going to Florida during a tropical storm and finding a bonanza of shells, this book explains how they are formed, colors and animals that live in them. Great for anyone interested in the ocean or in shells.
I received this book along with three other shell books. This book will go on the coffee table along with some shells I have collected. The pictures are clear and colorful and makes you fell like going to the beach. I have been collecting shells along Anclote Island, Fl. and need to go to Sanabel Island, Fl. The author recommends this as the best shelling location in America. I hope I find some of the shells in this book there. I'll be a happy sheller. This is a good book to buy for beautiful pictures and the story behind how shells are formed but I would look elsewhere for books to ID shells. An excellent book for the person just starting to collect shells or to give to someone already collecting.
Budd Titlow has put together one of the most fascinating books I've ever read about seashells. As a native South Carolinian born in Charleston, I've spent many hours walking our shores looking at and for seashells. I've also walked beaches in many other places searching for unique, interesting and beautiful shells...I found them all in this book. Every turn of a page brought a new understanding of and appreciaton for these magnificent examples of Gods creation. Thank you for writing what has become for me, one of the most appreciated books in our home.
The photos are wonderful and it makes a lovely addition to a coffee table or book stack, but you'll want to have it handy just for browsing. The company bent over backwards to get this to me in time to present as a gift.
Hardcover and illustrations are lovely - a decent reference book. I would prefer to see more submissions (more types/pics of shells) and more detail. For the money tho, I'm satisfied.
