The Usborne Puzzle Adventures are a series of brightly illustrated mystery stories for primary school readers that are unique because of the reader interaction required in the reading of them. On every page a question is asked of the reader to solve, whether it be the decoding of a secret message, the piecing together of a puzzle, or the finding of an object hidden somewhere in the illustrations. This book (and all of the others in this series) promotes problem-solving and lateral thinking, and as a ten year old there were few things I liked more than curling up with a pen and paper in order to solve the puzzles therein, whether they were set in a spooky manor house, far-flung regions of the earth, or the distant past or future.In this installment, young Annie wins a competition that allows her to travel to Egypt to see the priceless Lost Idol of the Moon God, recently excavated by Professor Potts and his young assistant Eric. On board a cruise ship that travels down the Nile to the site of the Moon Temple, Annie finds herself surrounded by strange characters. But it's when they get to the underground tomb that the unthinkable happens: after a brief blackout, the idol goes missing! Now it's up to Annie to figure out who is behind the theft.Though "The Curse of the Lost Idol" is not my favourite in this series (mine would have to be The Vanishing Village and Journey to the Lost Temple), it's still a fun read nonetheless.
