Wildlife of the Pacific Northwest is much more than a traditional field reference guide - it gives regional context, takes nothing for granted, and is jam-packed with the author's crisp, color photographs. The mammal section is most in-depth, but there is ample coverage of birds, some inverts, as well as reptiles and amphibians.Dave Moskowitz is a very knowledgeable, articulate, and experienced wildlife educator and tracker. If you spend any time in the outdoors in the Pacific Northwest, you owe it to yourself to pick up a copy of this indispensable text. This is a great book.
Logically organized, and makes identifying tracks and sign easy. The binding is really strong, and the cover is somewhat water resistant, so it will hold up in the field. There is also a ruler running along the back edge of the book which is not shown, but is helpful in sizing tracks.
I've begun regularly referring back to this book after hikes; I simple take a digital photo of the tracks, scat, and small animals that I see on my walks, and when I get home, I can ID them and learn more about them using this book. The book is almost entirely photos and drawings, which is a very good thing. It's mixed with detailed yet to-the-point text about the wildlife we see in the Pacific Northwest. This series of guides by Timber press is excellent; I also love the one on Insects of the Pacific Northwest, and also Wildflowers of the Pacific Northwest.
If you're new to wildlife observation and need a field guide book, this book is just amazing. The cover is thicker than your normal paperback so it doesn't get damaged easily and protects the book well. Behind the cover page is a quick index to all the main animals you want to quick reference, then there's a quick section covering all the main animal tracks. Then after that its greater detail on animal behavior etc. This is my go-to book.
This is a seriously amazing book! My husband and I love to hike, and this book lets us identify the animal tracks and markings that we see while on our hikes. The cover is beautiful, the pictures inside are stunning, and the text is packed with information and very easy to understand. This book also makes a great gift, as I've bought it for family that's interested in wildlife, and they loved it. It makes a great "coffee table" book too, as all of our guests are drawn to the lovely cover and can't help checking it out. The author is fantastic, and I would feel comfortable buying anything by him without sampling it first. If you live in the Pacific Northwest and love to hike (and even if you don't), I would recommend this book. It's always fun to learn something new, and this book is a great way to do that. My thanks to the author. Highly recommended!
I purchased this bird watching book along with, and two monocular telescopes. They are for my two grandsons who are each 7 years old. I thought they would have fun tromping around the small family farm that one lives one and exploring all the wild life.
My class was recommended this book by a teacher. While it does not cover every species, it does cover the majority of the mammals likely encountered here. I would prefer more coverage of all the mammals and herps, and leave the the birds for another book. However, I still found this book very informative and would recommend it for those working on learning wildlife native to the Pacific Northwest.
Very good field guide for northwest trackers/naturalists. Very helpful to have when i was taking a cyber track eval in western WA. Clear pics and animal habitat info. This book covers everything from mammals to birds to insects. One of my favorite tracking books, and I have most of the well known ones from modern to old school North American authors.
