A curious characteristic of most Hawaiian seashells is their extra large size in comparison with the same species from other areas. Some shells of Hawai'i have evolved into unique species not found elsewhere in the world, and several local specimens are highly prized by international collectors. Unlike other tropical islands, such as those in the South Seas where seashells are found in abundance, Hawaiian shells are relatively scarce. Actually, many different species of shells occur here, which means that each type must compete for food and living space. Thus, we find an interesting variety of Hawaiian seashells, while collectors never discover great populations of any single kind. This handbook presents 137 individual seashells, both common and rare, that live in the coastal waters of America's 50th state. Information for HAWAIIAN SEASHELLS was compiled by Stephen Quirk with the assistance of Betsy Harrison. They also provided the photographer with excellent specimens of shells from their own collections and from other members of the Hawaiian Malacological Society.

That is exactly what it is. A Hawaiian Seashell Museum in the form of a book. Very nicely made-even though it is a field guide of the 70's. It is a very small, thin book. Not many pages, only a few. It shows quite a few seashells found in Hawaiian waters of the Pacific. Full color, clear photos of every shell with info for each. It gives the names of each seashell scientifically, the common name and also the Hawaiian name. It tells you exactly how large each shell can grow, where they are found in the sea and how deep. What is neat about it is it also gives you some interesting facts about each shell. I really love this book even though it is a very old book, printed in 1972. It is a lovely book. I only wish they could add more pages of shells-unless that's all the shells there are found in the waters around the islands. That's my reason for a 4 star rating. I just wish there was more lovely pages to flip through. I would take this book with me if I ever plan to go to Hawaii and collect shells there-and I don't mean only on the beach! Purchasing them too! When I go through this book, I feel like I'm really visiting a museum. The way they have placed each seashell laying in a display case-not on the rocks or sand. Really neat.
