Charlotte Mason was an educator in England in the last century, and one of her main educational methods was to have every student keep a Nature Notebook or Nature Diary---a record of the natural world as the children observed it first-hand. The student's Nature Notebooks were filled with poetry, prose, line drawings and watercolors. "The Country Diary of an Edwardian Lady" is the perfect example of a fully developed Nature Diary. The author went out amid the English countryside and recorded what she observed---the flowers, trees, birds, insects. The artistry of the drawings and watercolors in this is absolutely breathtaking. If you're looking for an introduction to the idea of Nature Diaries, or you simply enjoy a book of true grace and beauty, then this is the book for you.
I had some of the stationary years ago, and didn't realize until I was at a second hand booksale the other day that the artwork was from a book. What a treasure of drawings! And how wonderful to think that someone a)saved it and b) had the courage to reprint it exactly as it was, handwriting and all. Worth it just for the artwork, plus you get a view into the world of the women of that time. Having just seen the film "Miss Potter" and how hard it was for a woman to be taken seriously as an artist in England, this book is a delight to find.
This is a really cool book. Great for inspiring children in making a nature journal. My daughter has loved tracing the pictures for her nature journal and using it as inspiration in her journal. This nature journal has such beautiful illustrations, poems and quotes to inspire the budding nature journalist. It also includes many of the common and scientific names of various plants and wildlife found in the area the author studied.
I first came across this book years ago and was fascinated by its beauty. As a fellow nature diarist (although with camera, not watercolors and pen), I recently picked up a copy at my local library and had a chance to really SEE it. This time, I could really appreciate what was here - a detailed, month-by-month look at the animals, plants, insects, as well as bits of poetry and observations of the changes of the seasons in the West Midlands countryside where she lived at the turn of the 20th century. This book, to me, really has a timeless feel to it - it could be 1906 or 2006 or 2016, and I still suspect one could go out in the countryside (though not, perhaps, exactly where she lived then) and find similar plants and creatures - or their equivalents here in the USA, or Australia, or wherever one lives. This is one of my favorite books that I have purchased. If you are a nature lover or an artist, buy this for the art if for no other reason!!!
I came upon this beautiful book while on a summer roadtrip, and have since been inspired to keep a nature notebook of my own (although my artistic talents are far from the masterful works portrayed within this delightful book). Edith Holden was an Edwardian lady and artist who kept this diary in the year 1906. She depicted scenes of nature in the countryside through the changing seasons, and the diary contains not only beautiful drawings of plants and animals, but also a collection of the author's personal reflections, favorite poems, and observations of her natural surroundings. To think this gem of a book would never have been found had it not been discovered in an English country house many years later (Edith Holden tragically died in a drowning incident in 1920, at the age of forty-nine). I find myself feeling very lucky to own a copy of this beautiful book and it shall be something that will grace my personal library for many years to come.
This is quite the beautiful book! It's the diary an English girl keeps of the various plants and birds that she finds throughout the year. While this would be far more interesting to someone who knows and has an interest in the subject, it was still interesting for me to read because of the absolutely beautiful drawings she includes, as well as the poems and information about the various months.
For many years, I had and enjoyed a copy of this book. Enjoyed it so much that I decided to give a copy to a friend. Some things are meant to be loaned, but others should only be given so you can keep your copy! The illustrations & nature observations are fascinating.
I sent this (from England) to a Canadian friend going through a tough time as a cheer-up gift. She has fallen absolutely in love with it and phoned me to rave about the exquisite illustrations. She says she'd like to lend it to all her friends, but isn't yet ready to let it out of her sight. Some books provide enduring pleasures - this is one of them.
