After more then 45 years in practice, this is first book review I have made. I have used the 2nd and 5th editions of this book. You will do well if you incorporate every word in this book into your mind. There is NO wasted text in this book! It took a lot of thinking from the author to decide what was important to include, and what was better left out. The author made excellent choices.This book is MONUMENTAL, A PIECE OF MEDICAL ART. If someone wants to be a great clinician, he/she must became conversant with this masterpiece. This is the "spinal cord" of clinical medicine. This is a book that is so good that you can begin and end your career with the information contained therein. This is the book which WILL MAKE YOU COMFORTABLE TO MAKE A LIFE OR DEATH DECISION ON AN EMERGENCY ON AN INTERCONTINENTAL FLIGHT. Thanks Dr. Marshall And Dr. Ruedy for this extremely helpful book.
This is the book that every med student wishes he had found earlier rather than later! It is like holding a resident in your pocket, it answers all those "stupid" questions you may have and tackles the step-by-step management of acute problems that you may encounter daily. I highly recommend this book to 3rd and 4th year med students, as well as interns who want to shine.
The principles and protocols are succinct, scientific contents quite accurate and indexing and cross reference very convenient. One of the best books that I would recommend to all my students and colleagues to refer to at all times of need.
As other reviewers have noted, the chapters are organized into common calls and have a breakdown of preliminary 'elevator` thoughts, major threats to life, pertinent bedside exam and management. Currently PGY-1 nightfloat on general medicine and I will continue using this in my surgical rotations as well. Would recommend as one of your labcoat books on call.
I don't know who's writing all these reviews but it is absolutely not up to what others rave about. The book is organized into several common presentations (i.e. chest pain, abdominal pain, etc.), which is a decent approach. However, the book fails to deliver their contents in an organized and to-the-point fashion - too wordy and sometimes, too simplified. I was really hoping for a book that can teach me some clinical pearls I didn't know about but it fails to address important pearls that may be useful in clinical setting. Not worth $28 in my opinion.
Excellent book, i recommend it for any student or practitioner in the medical field. Reads easy, straight to the point and very accurate
I don't agree with some of the reviews that call this a good general text or handbook for medicine: it's not that, and there are much better choices for both of those functions. However, this is perfect for cross-cover and on-call shifts encountered in medical school. In my case, I ended up seeing a lot of patients by myself as a med student before getting the resident, especially when we got busy, and I had this book with me. It is laid out perfectly. You can read the "elevator thoughts," life-threatening rule-outs, and quick differential in even a short elevator ride, which improves confidence and efficiency at the bedside, and flip through the rest of the chapter on the way back to the call room. Being on-call as a med student can be stressful, but having this book makes it so easy it feels like you're cheating. I'm doubtful this book would be useful for anyone more experienced as an intern, as it seemed my residents knew most of this already, but as a med student it was invaluable even without investing the time to read it cover to cover.
Fantastic text with pertinent information for the PA, NP or Resident. Easy to follow, nice outline with the 'what-to-know' and how to take care of it!
