People in healthcare do a horrible job explaining things. It's like when you go to the car mechanic and they start talking about how a certain part of the transmission is messed up and how the catalytic converter wasn't getting enough air and you're totally lost and wondering what a transmission is in the first place.Contrast that to when you learned about basic biology. You learned that we're made up of cells, there are different kinds of cells, and there are components within the cell like the cytoplasm and nucleus. It's always explained very systematically and clearly. If you asked someone in the healthcare world to explain what a cell is, they would probably start by rambling about the golgi complex and why it's shaped the way it is.For so long I've yearned for people to back up and say, "ok, here are the different components of a hospital and this is how it works." I thought this book might be it. It's not. Instead, it takes the approach that plagued my entire graduate career where different specialists are asked to talk/write about a certain topic. Instead of someone really being thoughtful about what we might want to know about nursing, what might not make sense, and what the best way to present that information might be, it's as if someone just said, "we need a section on nursing" and hired a nurse to write about whatever they thought was relevant. Author gets to say "cool, nursing covered, next section." But this sort of check-the-boxes approach allows for the type of rambling mentioned at the beginning of this review, and the book ends up reading about as well as you would expect for a book put together by a bunch of authors who haven't talked to each other.Words are brought up but not defined.
