The quotations contained in this monumental volume consist of aphorisms, maxims, proverbs, and comments of Jewish authorship or on Jewish themes. Here is a rich treasury compiled from over 2,500 years of Jewish writings–from the Talmud, the Mishnah, the Zohar, and the Bible, through excerpts from Rashi, Maimonides, the Baal Shem Tov, as well as Spinoza, Disraeli, Herzl, Freud, Einstein, and many others. For more than forty years Dr. Joseph L. Baron, the eminent Jewish scholar, gathered material for this work, mining all the great treasuries of classic Jewish literature. The result is this magnificent volume, a classic in its own time. Classified according to subject, the quotations are indexed by topic and author. Full source references are given as well as bibliographic data.

So much in this collection of Jewish quotations spanning 2,500 years! It will take me some time -- perhaps forever -- to digest thse 18,000 quotations in 1,000 subjects. But the compiler has done a great job of indexing the sayings. And they come from such diverse sources as the Bible to works of the 20th century, from prophets, philosophers, educators, statesmen, rabbis, novelists. No end to variety. For a writer like me, I'll be digging into this treasure store often. Just one like the following can make me think more deeply: "It is the misfortune of kings [presidents?] that they will not listen to truth." Jacoby to Frederick Wilhelm IV, 1840. "A home without laughter is a home without love." There! Only 17,998 sayings left for me to ponder. But since the compiler, an eminent Jewish scholar, spent 40 years compiling these sayings, I can spend a few more months digesting them. I look forward to finding many jewels in this mine.

To express it in a simple form, this book is a must for everyone interested in philosophy, ethics and what the jews have said about diverse themes throughout history. Its quotations come from people who lived in different times, places and cultural settings but who shared one thing.
