Sikh American women do the lion’s share of organizing and executing the business of the Sikh community, and they straddle multiple lives and worlds—cross-cultural, intergenerational, occupational, and domestic—yet their experiences of faith, family, and community are virtually invisible in the North American milieu and have yet to be understood, documented, or shared. Until now. In Her Name Is Kaur: Sikh American Women Write About Love, Courage, and Faith, Sikh American women explore the concept of love from many angles, offering rich, critical insight into the lives of Sikh women in America. Through a chorus of multi-generational voices—in essays ranging in tone from dramatic to humorous—they share stories of growing into and experiencing self-love, spiritual love, love within family, romantic love, the love they nurture for humanity and the world through their professional work, and more. Eye-opening and multifaceted, this collection of stories encourages its readers to take the feeling of love and turn it into action—practical action that will make the world a better place to be for everyone, regardless of their faith or creed.

As a professional Sikh woman born and raised in the US, it was truly refreshing to be able to identify with other Sikh women in the western world and abroad. I felt that I could relate to almost every story on some level. As a Sikh mother, it was so inspiring to read about other Sikh mothers and the values of Sikhi they are instilling in their children at a young age. As a Sikh daughter, living in a home with my in-laws, I absolutely loved the stories about parents and in-laws, stories that addressed ethics, virtues and values, and knowing what matters most. And as a Sikh wife, I adored the stories about marriage and falling in love. Each and every story filled me with such a range of emotions - happiness, sadness, smiles, and some left me in tears. I couldn't wait to turn each page and read what's next. I'm looking forward to coming back to this book time and time again.

It's wonderful to hear from these women and their poignant experiences in both life and love, especially coming from a culture that the West knows little of, or at best has misunderstood. BRAVO to these brave women who speak to the hearts and heartaches of all women!

Reading these amazing stories, we find connections to our own lives.Meeta Kaur, in the story “The Way Home” writes“…within myself, an entire solar system revolving around my faith. In 2014, Sikh women’s voices are still missing from powerful spaces in our community. You won’t find them on gurdwara committees or singing kirtan at Darbar Sahib. That’s why Her Name is Kaur offers a voice that Sikhs need to hear. But it also presents a voice that women everywhere need to hear. The timing of Her Name is Kaur fits right in to our Lean In, #yesallwomen era. Its stories remind every woman that each of us stands for all of us. All women – Sikh or not - need to build their own communities or sangats to support, love and reflect on their lives. Her Name is Kaur is a special text because it allows us to immerse ourselves in our sangat at a moment’s notice. No matter where you’re standing, just open the book to any page and you'll be pulled right back into the safety of that langar kitchen, surrounded by the women and stories that inspire and compel you to be yourself.

Having been a part of Sikh Love Stories, creating this novel has been a thrilling ride. As a Sikh, love is a driving force in my life, whether it is between myself, God or for another. Writing about love and it's bliss is extremely rewarding; having read the entire book now, it is without a doubt that these women have surpassed courageous. The stories are y full of love, inspiration and courage but also reach to the reader at a very personal level. I felt as if I could relate to each and every story with great compassion. This book is only the beginning of the opening conversation not only for Kaurs, but the Sikh community on a whole and their relationship with LOVE!

One of my favorite books! It's one of the books that changed my life and brought me closer to Sikhi. I highly recommend this book to every Sikh American. It will give you self-confidence and change your perspective on life. As a 22 year old, I can't wait to share this book with my children when I become a mother later in life.

I don't have much time for leisure reading, as a professional and a single mom. But I am so glad I chose to invest some time reading this book.Reading it made me feel like I was surrounded by a circle of sisters with a deep spiritual connection, sharing experiences and supporting each other with their stories of love.In particular, the story about love between a daughter and mother-in-law almost brought me to tears, it felt so real and gave a perspective I have never really heard before.I only hope the authors know what a great accomplishment they have achieved by opening up and sharing their experiences. And I hope they are prepared for a lot of invitations to have tea with the extended family of sisters they have created with this book!If a part 2 comes out, I will order it without a doubt.
